Hard drive recognition

Hi. The previous set up on my computer was a windows 2000 operating system with all associated programs on a 20 gig hard drive (C drive) and all other pictures and music files etc saved on a 2nd 40 gig hard drive (D drive). I then upgraded to windows XP professional and used a new hard drive (120 gig) for fresh install of the XP OS. I did this by removing both drives and installing the new bigger drive as drive C. I then loaded Windows XP (on the new 120 gig hard drive- C drive) rebooted and all was well. Then I proceeded to 'plug in' my old D drive, now when I go to start> 'right click' my computer> `click' manage opening up computer management> disk management, the old D drive turns up as disk 1, unknown, online with a black bar above and I can’t access it through windows explorer etc. So as I figured I could not access it with the new install of win XP I pulled out the new 120 gig hard drive and reinstalled my old 20 gig hard C drive with win 2000 and what used to be my old drive D thinking that I could burn the files on DVD and the put in the new 120 gig hard drive, reformat the old 40 gig hard drive and copy files back from the DVD's onto the new 120 gig hard drive. Now, under the old win 2000 my old D drive does not show up at all in the previous configuration. Again, in disk management D drive turns up as disk 1, unknown, with a black bar above. What do I do to access my old D drive under my new install of Windows XP? I have not initialized nor formatted the D drive. Thanks.

Are you resetting the slave/master/single jumpers correctly when you move the drives
around? Cable select is unreliable.

Actually the D drive is on cable select. Should I revert it to slave?

Forgot to mention that I didn't mess with the jumpers as the D drive was working fine under Win 2000.

You need the Acronis program to sort all this out.

Acronis Partitioner is the standalone program. They may also have included this in a "suite".
