Missing GB's

Hi, I have 25 supposedly gigabytes on my laptop but three of them were used by the manufactorer, understandable.. But I redone my laptop a few months ago and when I redid it I was missing 8GB's and still am.. I never messed with it becuase I didn't have the time but now its bugging me cuz I need the space..

I'm thinking the registry needs to be cleaned or theres some hidden files or something? I show hidden folders and I calculate my C: Drive and it only comes up to 17+GB's (I know I need to clean it off but don't have the time) where is the other 8?

Can someone tell me what may be wrong? If you need more details I will try to explain better but this basicly tells you everything...

Thanks for the help!

Under folder options on drive C (Tools>Folder Options>View check Hidden Files and Folders - this should now, under Properties show the correct total space used. If you want to find out just what is using the space then do a search in Explorer for files larger than 1MB - this will identify the relevant files - post back when you have this info and if you are still not satisfied with the response!!

XP OPERATING SYSTEM

What is the make and model of the laptop? When you "redid" it, did you simply install Windows a second time?

On your boot screen do you have a choice of operating system? Can you post your boot.ini file here please. When you go to disk management can you see any unallocated space? Do you have an XP CD or do you have the manufacturers Recovery CD? If an XP CD is it a full version or is it an upgrade version, and does it have Service Pack Two? Click the link at the top, download and install Everest and find the hard-drive specifications. Did you use fdisk when "re-doing" the installation, or did you use the XP CD to partition and format? FYI 10 GB Decimal = 9.313 BG Binary size. You always 'lose' a bit after formatting.

So when you do the search what shows as occupying the space?

Drive Sizes So you have roughly 23.84 total then the 3 taken by the manufacturer = 20.84 System Restore if at default size takes 12% of that leaving about 18.34 Recycle Bin at default takes another 10% ........... Seems pretty normal!! You can regain space by reducing the System Restore to 2% whihc is more than adequate and the Recycle Bin to the same - plus there are numerous options for regaining space by deleting various 'useless' Windows folder and options.

On top of that, most hard drives nowadays are not as big as they claim to be. That's
because most HDD manufacturers now use the convention that one (1) GB equals 1,000,000,000
bytes, but Windows still calculates through the old way, which is:

1 GB = 1024 MB = 1024 KB = 1024 B

So according to Windows, a modern 120 GB hard drive can contain:
120,000,000,000 bytes / 1024 (KB) / 1024 (MB) / 1024 (GB) = 111.76 GB, which means,
according to Windows, your hard disk is not 120 GB, but only 112 GB. Means there's
eight GB missing.

On a 25 GB hard disk this would mean 25,000,000,000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 23,28 GB. Two GB missing. Add that to the hidden files & folders the others mentioned, and it's easy to see you're missing quite a bit. By the way, System Restore points don't show through the explorer, and for some reason I've never been able to show Temporary Internet Files through Explorer either. Both can really add up. If you're really interested, you can download a tool called SeqoiaView here... Link It's a small tool that will show you the entire content of your harddrive on a single screen, with all the files represented by coloured squares. The size of a square shows how large the file that square represents is, relative to all the other files and to the entire capacity of the drive. Sound a bit complicated, but you'll get it if you try it, it's really very simple.

Okay, I found out wheres my problem using that SequoiaView (Thanks John)

My problem is I have files when I redone my computer I guess the old files where still in there? and the CD I used to restore is'nt the full cd its the one the manufactorer gave and its from Dell and no its not service pack two but I do have service pack two by downloading it..

Now here is the problem to my problem.. the files that where there are in my C:\RECYCLER\ folder and I go there and everything is hidden.. I show the hidden files but I cannot see them and I seen how much space is used in there and it is 2.04GB of hidden files..

So does anyone know how to get these files to view? Or just how to delete them from that program that john recommended...

Thanks~
