When I schedule chkdsk to run on startup, it doesn't

I have been experiencing problems with my computer, and I keep getting corrupt file warnings in the tray, but whenever I try to schedule chkdsk to run on the next restart, it doesn't even start to run when I restart.

Dan the man also has the same problem... computer freezing now on a regular basis, and I hope to get it fixed by catching some errors with scandisk. Gracias! P.S. I know there atleast used to be a registry entry (or maybe it was win.ini) entry that you just change the value from 0 to 1, but I can't remmember where/what it is.

Could you describe the problems you're having, in more detail? Corrupt file warnings
in the tray, sounds strange. Is there an icon in the tray, that you don't recognize?
Do you scan for virus and spyware regularly?

Try running System File Checker and see if that gets anywhere. First, exit some items
in the tray area. Start/Run then type SFC /SCANNOW then hit Enter. Windows
will check for missing or corrupt system files. You may be asked to insert your XP
CD. Let us know how it goes.

Start your own thread, if you're having problems. This isn't fair to the originator of this thread. How'd you like, "me too" for a response?? You can follow this thread if you like, but it's read-only to you, unless you can help.

Sounds like you really do need to run chkdsk. Boot the Recovery Console from your XP CD and run chkdsk c: /f from there. Run it several times if necessary until it comes back with no errors. Then boot as normal and run SFC /SCANNOW as Carol mentioned.

XP OPERATING SYSTEM

Hello Michele, Just take a look in the registry and see if this value is set correctly... 1. Run the Registry Editor(Regedt32.exe). 2. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey: \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager 3. Change the BootExecute entry from: autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C: To: autocheck autochk * If it is already showing: autocheck autochk * , just let us know. It might help to run this clean-up schedule first... "Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents of: The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and... The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder (You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag." EmpTemp & CCLeaner Do you have a problem running Disk Cleanup? If so then delete the entire Compress Old Files key in the registry... 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER. 3. Locate, and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches 4. On the File menu, click Export, and then click Desktop, type VolumeCaches in the File name box, and then click Save. Note This step creates a backup of the VolumeCaches registry key. If you experience any problems after you complete the steps that are listed in this procedure, you can use this backup to restore the VolumeCaches key to its original state. To restore the key, double-click the VolumeCaches.reg file on your desktop, and then click Yes. 5. Expand the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches 6. Delete the Compress old files registry key. 7. Quit Registry Editor.

I know this is an old post, but I just ran into this myself. Check your binary autochk.exe in your windows\system32 directory. When I tried to run mine from the command line I would get a "Program too big to fit in memory" error. I replaced it with the version in my installation media and now chkdsk runs when I schedule it at start up. Don't know how or why this happened, but maybe it will help you too. I have a narrative of my experience at http://www.suehappycowboy.org/blog/?p=112 but be forwarned, it is profanity laced.
