Note: Control Panel / Add Hardware does not find anything to install. When looking at Sound in the device manager, no problems with any device. Thanks for your help!!!

I had this problem as well. It happened randomly in the middle of downloading music.
But thanks to some tech help from another site, the fix was pretty easy.

Go to Start --> Run, and type in services.msc.

A window will pop up with a list of services. Scroll down to Windows Audio. Right-click
and click on Properties.

Make sure that "Startup type" is set to automatic. Also, make sure, under "Service
status," start is selected. (Mine was somehow set on stopped. I clicked start and
-- voila! -- it worked.)

Hope this works for you, too.

The easiest trick is just to reboot your machine, if turning on the service through services.msc doesn't work. Reinstall Windows? good grief!

Thanks for a great hint - and SO SIMPLE! I replaced a motherboard on an e-machine system and had everything working but the sound. Tried all other "solutions" (uninstalling and reinstalling sound drivers, installing the latest version of sound drivers, stripping the registry of all previous sound drivers, stripping all non-motherboard PCI\VEN_ids from the registry, cleaning up the *.inf files, reinstalling Windows, etc.) The device list was always clean, but the sound never worked. After spending more than 12 hours on this problem, your solution took only two minutes to fix. Thanks!!!!

Just wanted to say thanks too - the fix worked perfectly. I just wanted to add that I think my problem was cause by me running a DOS version of the game Settlers II - it always reports some sort of audio conflict when I start it up, and I guess this is what 'stopped' the service. I was pulling my hair out as iTunes wasn't working...so thanks!

as for me too, the problem started when i cleared space on my hard drive and uninstalled something accidentally. i think it was something called "soundmax". don't know how to reinstall it, assuming that's where the problem is.

I do not know a permanent fix at this time; however, I know how to quickly fix it
without restarting. I have a Create SB Audigy 2 ZS soundcard. Whenever I start
getting error that "There are no active mixer devices available", here is what I
do...

I go to Device Manager, right-click on the "Creative Game Port" device and uninstall
it. Then, I right-click on "Sound, video and game controllers" and select "Scan
for hardware changes".

That will get the sound running until the next reboot or so. I wish I knew how to
permanently fix it.

Thanks so much--have been looking for a quick or permanent fix for this since reinstalling XP a few weeks ago. I notice that this works too for a while after the restart: start > Run > "msconfig" > Services > uncheck "Windows Audio" > Enable All > OK > Restart. If anyone knows a permanent solution (rather than has an educated guess about one--there are plenty of them posted around the Web already!) , it'd be great if they could post it. Many thanks!

Solution! No need to restore! Controlpanel->admin tools-> computer management->drivers somehow right click multimedia audio controller...told me driver is missing. I clicked, install this driver & it installed realtek ac 97 for my compaq running XP. Driver details points to file: c:\system\alcxmntr.exe. Not quite sure how I got there...but keep hunting, you'll get there. When I clicked search for new hardware or went thrrough trogbleshoot could not find resolve...just played around and got it working. I wonder if a virus erased this file since so many people impacted. Thats all I know..please don't ask me questions via email...I'm an expert in databases not PCs. HTH.

Volume Icon Is Not Displayed in the Notification Area, and You Receive an Error Message When You Try to Add It View products that this article applies to. Article ID : 319095 Last Review : January 23, 2004 Revision : 1.0 This article was previously published under Q319095 SYMPTOMS

On a Windows XP-based computer, you may experience one or both of the following behaviors: • The Volume icon is no longer displayed in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar. • When you try to add the volume control icon to the notification area (in the Sounds and Audio Devices utility in Control Panel, click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box on the Volume tab), you receive the following error message: Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. As a result, you cannot start the Volume Control program and adjust the volume and sound level settings of your computer. Back to the top CAUSE This behavior can occur if the Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing. Back to the top RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically. 2. Click Start, and then click Run. 3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK. 4. Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located (generally C:\Windows): CD-ROM drive: cd i386 expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command. For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command prompt (pressing ENTER after each line): e: cd i386 expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe 5. Type exit to quit the command prompt. 6. Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area (if you selected this option). Ok that works but if you take one more step and select the Recovery Tab and in the 3 Drop-Downs change from "Take No Action" to "Restart the Service" then you won't have to keep repeating the action in the future when the problem reoccurs as windows will automatically take care of it for you.

Seems that if you open the mixer as soon as it is available after boot it will work
til you close it. Then is can't find it again. Hope someone can figure this out.

Microsoft must have done an update that caused this.

Also lost some functionality of my keyboard. Can't open Outlook from email button
on keyboard.

Check device mgr - if all sound devices are working properly - go to start>control panel>admin tools>services - scroll down to Windows audio. Make sure it is set to Automatic and all dependant programs are enabled. Under the recovery tab select "restart service" for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd failures. Worked for me....

There are no active mixer devices available. Go to the RUN menu and type "services.msc", scroll down to "Windows Audio" and make sure it's running and/or set to "automatic".

Not sure if anyone has solved this already, but another quick and temporary fix was to go to Administrative Tools Panel, click Services, Find Windows Audio from the services list and start it. Not a permanent solution but were getting close :)

I have a HP a250n with Windows XP Home and SP2. two weeks ago I had to do a system recovery and somehow I lost all my audio. Everything would be grayed out under Sound and Audio Devices, it would say No Audio Devices, and of course I would get the no mixer devices error. I have a Realtek AC97 driver which said it was enabled but not functioning properly. And under my Services my Windows Audio would be set to automatic and Started. after uninstalling it multiple times from the device manager and reinstalling it, I managed it to say Enabled but Not Started. Still no audio with everything grayed out. Just when I was about to give up, I solved it -:) here is how: 1- open device manager 2- click sound and video game controls 3- my reinstalled audio driver realtec ac97 was there among some audio and video codec and legacy drivers. 4- click on View tab and check "show hidden devices" 5- I saw about 15 other audio devices there some repeated three times. Uninstall all of these even the ones that say Microsoft Kernel ... 6- after I uninstalling all of them Windows started reinstalling these itself, I just had to click ok for the digital signature. OH MY GOD, I heard a beep from my speakers. 7- I went to the Sounds and Audio devices and no more grayed out sections, everything was back to normal. I have audio again.

I have been able to find out the reasons behind the problem. The audio drivers installed are not the correct drivers that has been installed. The most likely reason for that is a reinstall of the Operating System. In the event it would not indicate that the drivers are incompatible. All I did was install the compatible audio drivers and it immediately solved the problem. For the correct drivers one should go to the computer manufacturers website and key in the Desktop or Laptop product code in their support site where you can download the relevant drivers. Jake you should try this and I am sure it would work. Thanks, Arunasish

THIS FIXES no active mixer devices!!!!!!!

I just fixed the problem you are having. Hopefully I can explain well enough to help you. This means u have no sound card installed so I will help you as much as I can to install the proper devices. You will need the SYSTEM RESTORE DISC that comes with ur computer/laptop. It will have like applications, drivers, & Operating System, etc. 1) click START>CONTROL PANEL> (make sure u switch to classic view in upper left hand of control panel) SYSTEM> HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER **scroll and see if any icons have yellow question marks on them.. if they do, delete/unistall them.** (((( U need to know who ur MOTHERBOARD MANUFACTURER is. Most likely u have had to restore ur system recently and what has happened is that ur system was restored without ur Motherboard chipsets. U can usually get these drivers and devices from the Manufacturer's website. ( Mine was AMD and they had a full list and I found the appropriate one, downloaded it and VIOLA!))) OK, Now that U have downloaded the appropriate drivers from ur MOTHERBOARD MANUFAC. WEBSITE, install it. ~NOW, put ur SYSTEM RESTORE DISC in and restart ur computer ... when u get back to ur desktop, after a minute or so It should pop up that NEW HARDWARE has been FOUND. ( If it doesn't go to START>CONTROL PANEL>in catagory view, click PRINTERS AND OTHER HARDWARE>ADD HARDWARE If u did it right, it should install the appropriate drivers. BEST OF LUCK... ALSO, a great live chat at http://www.driverguide.com has people online at all hours willing to help you.

Unfortunately, the solution doesn't apply to my case. The Windows Audio Status is "Started" with "Automatic" Startup Type. I've noticed that Stop, Start, Pause, Resume and Restart are disabled.

Hi!

Thnkx for posting this Mixer Device / Device ID has
been used out of range etc. kinda error resolution.

I had to regularly restart the computer to play
MIDI / WMA files in Winamp although the other files
Mp3 etc. played just fine.

So, the trick of Services > Start Windows Audio
Device (set to automatic) service, jst worked nice
and I hope this wont happen again..

I dont know but randomly the Sound Device failed
to work....Does there any good reason for that.

Any Ways! Thanks for the Resolution posted here.
