Question about 'Enabling or Disabling Automatic Windows Update'

I have a question about Enabling
or Disabling Automatic Windows Update:
As of 2005 Aug 10 I have lost the ability to disable Automatic Update in Windows
XP Prof SP1. Automatic is now "ON", and all four control options are greyed out.
This happened following installation of the first (installed in the morning of 2005
Aug 10) of the 8 updates released 2005 Aug 10. Mid afternoon, the remaining 7, which
I had not selected for download or install, installed themselves, and I could not
interrupt the process. How do I regain control of updates ? Mike

Can you uninstall the updates via add/remove making sure "show windows update" is
checked?

Have you checked whether the" Automatic Updates" Service is disabled or not?
Start - Run - type Services.msc, or go into Control Panel - Administrative
Tools - Services. Double click Auto updates, under Startup type - use the downpointing
arrow and select Disable, then Apply.
Note: You need to go back and set it to Auto, whenever you check for updates again.
You can uninstall any updates you don't want, or those that don't apply to your situation,
btw.
