strange bug with text files
Monday, August 15, 2005 at 11:46 am Posted by Andrew

First of all my computer probably has a million viruses in it but im planning on
reformatting soon. But i dont think it has anything to do with this. Whenever i save
a text file in notepad with the phrase "Four score and seven years" and open it back
up, it's replaced with chinese characters. No other phrase does it. The file is the
same size before and after.

The virus is doing that. Only affects Notepad or also WordPad (plain text files)?

The Gettysburgh Address.
"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new
nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created
equal."
Would it have read better if it had said,
"Four score and seven years ago our Fathers brought forth upon this World a new World
order, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men and women
are created equal."
But is that the truth?
Are all men and women created equal?
If so then why is there religious persecution?
If there were no religions, and only science, then religions could not persecute
each other and scientists would agree not to do so.

It's not a virus - I just tried it here on a few machines and it does exactly the
same !!
And these definitely don't have a virus or any infections .....

Windows XP Powertoys
Very interesting! I will try it. I have Windows 3.0, 3.11fw, 1.01, 95OSR2.0, 98SE,
NT3.1, XP Home and XP Pro. I will try in each of them. I think it will affect Notepad,
Wordpad, and other applications because it probably is a ?bug? in the Win32 (and
Win64 and Windows?) API.

If the Big Brother Bill would read this text, would fix this ?bug? releasing WinXP
SP3, Win2K SP5 and Win2K3 SP2. And Windows Vista Beta 2.

After all, I'm sure it's nothing personal. ;) I think the so-called "bug" is in Kernel32.dll
or NTDLL.DLL or User32.dll. (if NTDLL.DLL, probably a Rtl function) If not, then
it is in Notepad.exe. I don't know if MS Word and WordPad .txt files have the same
issue, but if they have it, one of the 3 DLLs is "designed" to cause that problem.
Ah, GDI32.DLL could be the source, too. Or MSVCRT.DLL and other MS VC/VC++ runtime
libraries.

If you put it in quotes it doesn't do it. Without quotes it does.

Actually, just the start of the phrase:
four score and
shows up in Chinese.
Just four score doesn't

I have also found that if you open the file that has the Chinese characters, delete,
retype the phrase, save, close, open, then it is in English!
Or, if you type the same phrase on the line below the Chinese, that saves in English.

I will isolate Notepad.exe to run it under Linux - WINE. If Notepad is the bad guy,
then it will do the same thing using the WINE core files instead of Win32 core files.
If it doesn't do the same thing, then my theories about Windows evilness will become
real. Also, I will take look inside these .DLLs and .EXEs using a Hex editor and
a Resource Editor. Good idea.

Only happens with notepad. If you look at the same file with Word, WordPad or any
other editor, the data is there exactly as it should be, very, very wierd indeed.

I used a different text editor from

Try saving it as a txt file from word. It does the same thing. Only when you save
it as a formatted file it's ok.
Also, when you change it back to "four score and seven years ago" and save it again,
the size of the file is different, more than it should be.

Ah. So the fault is in the Win32 core DLLs. Well it may be Microsoft Bob 2.01 embedded
in Win32k.sys or in another file of the Win32 core. I will take a look to the Win32
heart soon. I don't have enough time yet. But the source of this problem must be
published!

If everyone on the planet were Buddhist they would all be equal, that is probably
why it is in Chinese.
Doesn't prevent Grasshopper syndrome though. Nor does it prevent the possibility
of a pestilence.
