How do i change display resolution for a specfic program?

hi, i seen some people open programs and it automatically changes the resolution to something like 1280 x 1024.. i want to open my windows media player and WinDVD (programs like those) @ 1280 x 1024, oppoose to my resolution right now 1680 x 1050.. i find it a hassle to change my resolution from display properties everytime before i open these programs.. i want to have them automatically change themselves when i click on the program.. i see a option for "run in 640x480 screen resolution" (right click on a program, then go to compatiablity).. how do i make that 640x480 option into something i want.. or is there another program i can download to specifically do what i want it to do? thanks

That is a function of the program not the OS
Unless the program offers an option you must change it manually

I have kicked this around too, not with WMP, but while gaming. What I don't understand is the two resolutions you are switching from are apples and oranges. I mean in the 1280x1024 mode your aspect ratio is 1.25 and as you write you are at 1.6 or 1680x1050. When I switch resolutions I make sure I pick one with the same aspect ratio. You are not. How do you get around that? There are two ways: tolerate letterboxing or stretch the screen. I don't like either way. Stretching distorts circles making them appear elliptical. Letterboxing is a waste of screen. While gaming I like a full screen with normal looking geometry. Just curious how you do that. Anyway to answer your question, from my experience especially games, it's always been a function of the software to allow you to pick the supported resolution you prefer. In gaming the higher the better with the trade off of slower frame rate.

sittingbear, i don't know how.. but i think its my graphic card.. i haven't tested my resolution on games like counterstrike yet, but i know that it doesn't affect the fps of the games.. i don't like using 1280x1024.. i only use it for movies so i don't lose space on the left and right side of my monitor.. (btw i found a better one, 1280x960).. it gives you slight elliptical shapes but i guess its still better than losing 4 total inches of viewing space on a 20.1 widescreen monitor

Some video graphics cards have application profiles stored in a database. I guess intended for users who play a lot of different games requiring different and varied graphics card settings. My Nvidia card is one like that. I don't know if it works with WMP. Still, there's the extra step of going to the graphics card GUI to select your app before you run it.
