Question about 'Why don't folders remember their position, sort order, or icon size?'

I have a question about Why don't folders remember their position, sort order, or icon size?:

I have tried many of the solutions here, some of which directly contradict each other! What gives? Also none of the solutions given here work. My Explorer window refuses point blank to remember size or position, no matter what I do to it in what sequence. Has anyone got the XP registry tweak for this MS bullcr@p?

Hi Dan, I tried every combination of: Remember each folder's view settings, Launch folder windows in a seperate process, Restore previous folder windows at logon, I always click on: apply to all folders, and CTRL-click when closing window. =================================

I don't think any of those are supposed to remember screen position.
You don't mention setting all folders to behave like the current one, that does preserve
sort order.
Icon size??? why is this one important?

Hi Ricer46, I agree, I don't think any of these work, but that's all the suggestions I've found so far. I did mention setting all folders to behave like current one, it's called "Apply to All Folders". Icon Size??? I didn't mention icons... ================================

Have you tried Tweakui? If not, it's a free download from microsoft. Do a search for tweakui.exe on google and the first hit or so should be the download site. After it's installed go to the Explorer tab and expand it. Go down to the 4th category - Customizations. The winXp default setting is 400. Change it to a higher number or try 600 - 800 range. That should do it.

Hi Sitting Bear, Yeah I have TweakUI. Forgotten I had, but I went an downloaded the latest version for XP and replace mine anyway. Not only does it not fix it, but the latest version now no longer displays my windows version on the desktop! Pure MS rubbish! ==================================

I have to agree with you that windows is annoying. I have to put up with it at home for my family to use. At work, all of our scientific data gathering and reduction is done in Linux where the user, if one has the privileges, is in complete control of the OS and there's no bulls__t to put up with. Windows is for fast food lovers, while Linux is for gourmets.

Hi Dan, Thanks for that. It's far better. I'm going to keep hacking at Xp though, as I'm sure someone else will have this problem, so may as well find out what causes it. My latest theory is the new monitor I am using. Very high resolution 22" CRT, maybe the monitors modes are confusing XP so that it thinks it is set differently when opening windows. When I find the cause I'll post back here. Thanks again.

>I've tried Tweakui, Fresh UI, plus all the advice in the book. I set all up as required, then XP remembers for a spell, even to my choice of details, then go out of Explorer and all is chaos once more. Time and again, all to no avail. Ask me if I love MS and Mr multi-millionare Bill. Not Pygmalion likely!!!!

I had the same problem, but it was on spanned dual monitors and I traced it to an NVidia driver setup problem. I found that setting Open windows on: 'Last display' caused it. May not be applicable to your problem, apologies... but it may help someone else.

Well it's now 3 months later, and no settings or tweaks suggested worked. I managed to "FIX" my problem by re-installing XP again. Brilliant solution Microsoft...NOT!
