Falcon's Malware Removal

Follow these steps:

  • Go to Start Menu, Run. Type the following path in the text box and click on OK: %SystemRoot%\INF
  • Locate the file IE.INF (not IE.PNF), right-click on it and select Install.
  • Insert your Windows XP CD if you don't have a source path (created by the OEM) on your hard disk.
  • If Windows asks you for a path, try the following: %SYSTEMROOT%\ServicePackFiles\i386 -or- (CD drive letter):\I386 -or- %SYSTEMROOT%\I386
"i386" could not be applicable to 64bit Windows XP. Replace if necessary.

This procedure had caused problems because I hadn't specified the paths mentioned here.

Tip: this can be used to reinstall the Search Assistant when you install SRCHASST.INF instead of IE.INF. Also, you can install the Utopia sound scheme by using the following command: %systemroot%\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection %systemroot%\inf\mmopt.inf 132 media_utopia

Note: do not perform the steps on any INF files. For example, SYSSETUP.INF is only for internal use by the Windows XP Setup. DOSNET.INF has the same purpose. HIVESYS.INF, HIVECLS.INF, HIVEDEF.INF, HIVEUSD.INF and HIVESFT.INF are used by the Windows XP setup program to build the Registry, so do not touch them.

System Restore can be re-installed this way also, using %systemroot%\inf\sr.inf
