Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

I have a question about Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers:

I read thru 20+ questions about this topic but still didnt find an awnser so ill just ask. i have a house with 4 PCs. 3 have windows xp the other has 98. i can go into my network places, double click the PCs and browse to my hearts content. Evryone else can also do the same... except browse MY pc. i have enabled the netbios and tcp protocols.. changed hexadecimals in regedit to allow anonymous logins and still nothing seems to work. it just gives that fantasticly (real word?) common error " //pcname is not accessible, you may not have permission, contact admin" blah blah blah. If anyone can help me out i would appreciate it, as its been months and i still cant get to my pc from anyone elses without using VNC or some other lame workaround. Thanks.

Try these steps - they may appear simple and obvious BUT they cover most of the common access and Sharing problems: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1126666174

Unfortnately, unlike in previous versions of Windows, XP does not have a command
that can be run to reset all share and NTFS folder permissions to default.

The only MS-approved way to reset share and NTFS folder permissions is to do a repair
reinstallation.

i didnt think i was trying to really reset permissions. my old folders work perfect, its the new ones i make AFTER the changes that dont work.

Well, that was my point. Who knows what you bollixed up while trying to make it
work?

The old shares work, because they were established before the changes. The new ones
don't work. Inescapable conclusion: reset.

Thanks for the help. guess Ill just have to bite the bullet... or just leave it as it is for now. i was thinking of reformating eventually anyway. Its been awhile but refresh my memory, repair installation does NOT erase the drive correct? thanks =)

A repair reinstllation done with the MS XP CDROM is designed to preserve data and
installed programs.

How to perform
an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

There are some exceptions, so it would be wise to thoroughly read the above MS KB
article.
