Try JetStart
if you hate the Start Menu. As example, you can press the Win key and type 'word'
to run the MS Word application. All programs in the Start Menu can be arranged in
a floating toolbar by category (Office, Tools, Games, etc).

New version adds quick menu that activated when you hold mouse cursor over Start
Menu button about a second. It combines recently launched programs, categorized Start
Menu shortcuts and system commands like Restart or Shutdown. Only a single click
away and doesn't take up place on the screen. And best of all, it's a freeware.
