So try this:  go to this website: http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm and there follow the instructions to download and use these 3 zipped reg files: • Batch File Association Fix (Restore the default associations for BAT files) • EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files) • LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix (Restores Default Shortcut Behavior) If the troubled computer can't access the internet to effect the download, you' ll need to download the 3 files on another computer and copy them to removable media that you then can use to transfer the 3 files to the troubled computer. It still didnt fix the icons. I found out I can run programs through the dos prompt.
