I have lost all control of any program icon or any other way of starting an application
on my computer. I can start firefox and I can play a movie/mp3 or any other type
like that but when it comes to running an application, it either does nothing (if
I right click it it doesnt even give me the option to open the file) or says that
wants me to direct it to a program it can use to run it. I really need help. Thanks.

Are you clicking on the actual files, or on shortcuts to the files?

You said you can start Firefox, and I assume you can connect to the internet.
So try this: go to this website:
http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
and there follow the instructions to download and use these 3 zipped reg files:
• Batch File Association Fix (Restore the default associations for BAT files)
• EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files)
• LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix (Restores Default Shortcut Behavior)
If the troubled computer can't access the internet to effect the download, you'
ll need to download the 3 files on another computer and copy them to removable media
that you then can use to transfer the 3 files to the troubled computer.
