Spent about 6 hours working on it, and finally reinstalled XP as an "upgrade/repair" to the existing installation. That did the trick. Of course, unless HP has changed their ways, you can't do this with the XP disks they provide; you have to flatline the laptop and reinstall everything from scratch. You need to perform an "upgrade/repair" install of Windows XP to fix it (which, as I said before, may not be possible with the disks provided by Hewlett-Compaqard). The basic Windows sound hardware interface has gotten screwed up somehow, and you can reinstall drivers until your hair turns white, but it won't work. Thus, legacy drivers won't work, the "right" drivers won't work, and neither will anything else.
