Major Problem!!!

ok!.. got this pentium3, 600ghz, 64RAM from my sister to give to my parents! it came with windows 98SE on it but, some of the programs I wanted to install would require windows xp! so I tried to upgrade to windows xp pro with my CD and it did work but, it was just an upgrade and some programs where left on it!! so I decided to try and reformat it completely with windows xp pro cd! but it would not erase all the files on it?.. so I thought I'd uninstall everything I could and delete some parts so that it would be empty and ready for windows xp pro clean install!!..but now, I can't get back in it? the keyboard works when it's booting up and I can press delete to go into configurations! but after If I reboot I'll get the error saying I'm missing \windows\system32\c_1252.nls but there's no way for me to put it back on cause it doesn't get any further than that error! so it won't boot from the cd or floppy even when set for it! what can I do to get windows back on there? I'll answer any question you want cause I'm really out of ideas here! Thanks

First of all forget running XP with 64mb of RAM. You're looking at 10 minute boots,
and pretty much ten minutes to launch programs, 2 - 3 minutes just changing windows.
Word takes minutes to scroll through a document.

So go back to W98SE. change boot priority in the BIOS setup to boot from floppy disk.
Start with a W98SE floppy startup disk. Run fdisk, and delete all partitions. If
you made the mistake of converting to ntfs, you'll need to delete the non-DOS partition.
After partitions are deleted, create new ones, format, then re-install.

Thanks!

XP INFO  XP CLEANUP

How much RAM will this computer hold? You need a bare minimum of 256, but really the practical minimum is more like 512 MB If you click the XP Info link above you'll find a link to Emergency Boot Disk and there is also a '98 bootdisk image file available for download.

A folder called c_ in the c:\windows\system32 folder? Sounds pretty bogus to me,
malware/virus.

Do what RiceR46 said, repartition with fdisk and put 98 back on it.

Hey Dan! ok the thing is,my keyboard won't work after it boots up? the only thing I can do with it is press delete so get to the bios. after that it's useless so I cannot pick number 1,2or 3 from the floppy! and I can't write anything when it says to type help or press enter? I've tried conecting it in different usb's but it still won't work! this is the keyboard I'm using right now to type so it works :-) it's an IBM one and that's the same keyboard I use for this computer before I ended up deleting and un=installing everything I could cause I thought it'd make for an easy clean install???.. but now I know different!..lol Thanks!

It's not uncommon for a USB keyboard to not work in the BIOS setup.

There is only one solution, get/borrow a regular PS/2 keyboard. Then, start the
computer, enter the BIOS, and look for entries such as "USB legacy keyboard" or "Enable
USB legacy devices" or similar. Fiddle with these entries in order to make your
USB keyboard work in the BIOS, which of course is before the first byte of XP code
is loaded.

Although all of the ones I've ever used were bootable, I have been told that some
W98SE CDROMs were not bootable.

In any case, you will want to use fdisk as RiceR46 said to delete all exiting partitions
on the disk. Fdisk will see NTFS partitions as "unknown" partitions, but no matter
what, delete them all.

Then, start up the computer using either the W98 CD or the boot disk with CDROM support,
then run Setup from the CDROM.

If you have W98 questions you're best bet is to post them in the annoyances.org W98
forum.
