re: Question about 'How do I turn off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as my default image viewer?'

Why not simply associate image files with the viewer of your choice? It really isn't
necessary to hack the registry. If you have Irfanview installed, for example, set
the association for the file extensions of your choice.

Carol, Thanks for getting back to me. I am not to sure how to do that. I just bought
this computer and windows is fairly new to me. Can I down load Infraview. I have
xp media edition could I use that at all to view. The problem is the Fax viewer is
saving everything I have ever looked at. It's even saving Visa and Master Card images.
It's not so much that I want to get rid of it it's just that I don't want it to save
all these images.

It sound like you're talking about your temporary Internet files.
Your image viewer is not saving these files, Internet Explorer is. To get rid of
them Open IE, click Tools, then select Internet Options. In the temporary Internet
Files section, click on "delete files."
It's also a good idea to delete cookies and clear history once in a while too.

I don't know anything about XP Media edition, but check in Help and Support. There's
lots of info there. I don't know why Pic and Fax Viewer would be 'permanently'
saving every image you've ever looked at. Are you sure those aren't just in you temporary
internet files? Each image on every web site you visit, is first downloaded to the
TIF directory, so view them. Those should be cleared out regularly.

until you decide on another program you want to use.

You're welcome, Mark. Many of us use this program to clear out all the temporary
files, History, etc. It makes the job much more convenient and quicker than using
Internet Options or going to through all those directories.
Download CCleaner Before running it, click Options and specify any
Cookies you don't want removed. For example your Annoyances Cookie, you may want
to keep, since your forum preferences are stored there. Same with any others, then
you won't have to key in your user name and password each time you visit the site/s.
Note: Do not use the Issues section, if you're unfamiliar with registry cleaners.

Means of disabling
Because the viewer is part of the Windows operating system, it cannot easily be completely
removed. However, Microsoft has provided instructions for disabling it, as a possible
workaround for a security issue.
Unregister the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (Shimgvw.dll) on Windows XP Service
Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 Service
Pack 1
Microsoft has tested the following workaround. While this workaround will not correct
the underlying vulnerability, it helps block known attack vectors. When a workaround
reduces functionality, it is identified in the following section.
Note This workaround is intended to help protect against Web based exploit vectors
and is not effective against exploits that have Windows Metafile images embedded
in Word documents and other similar attack vectors.
Note The following steps require Administrative privileges. We recommend that you
restart the computer after you apply this workaround. Alternatively, you can log
out and log back in after you apply the workaround. However, we do recommend that
you restart the computer.
To un-register Shimgvw.dll, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type "regsvr32 -u %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll" (without
the quotation marks), and then click OK.
2. When a dialog box appears that confirms that the process has been successful,
click OK.
Impact of Workaround: The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer will no longer start when
users click a link to an image type that is associated with the Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer.
To undo this workaround after the security update has been deployed, reregister Shimgvw.dll.
To do this, use this same procedure, but replace the text in step 1 with “regsvr32
%windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll” (without the quotation marks).
