Reformating should be a last straw effort. Try running Defrag under "All Programs-Accesories-System Tools". This should help, Good Luck! BJ

XP INFO  XP CLEANUP

Run through the XP Cleanup routine on the second link above, and if you decide to re-install look through the items on the XP Info link.

Yep, format is the LAST option. Another possibility is a virus. Experienced users can normally look at their active task list. Possibly your best approach to eliminate this possibility is to download sysclean from trendmicro.com (along with the latest pattern file). In safe mode, run sysclean and it will automatically clean out most infections. Another approach to the same problem is to procure HIJACKTHIS (free) and post the results to one of the forums that do analysis on the processes running on your PC. Another approach would be to click on START/RUN and enter MSCONFIG. Change normal load to DIAGNOSTIC and restart your system with the minimal set of processes. If you see a black and white difference in performance you then need to selectively add programs until you locate the culprit. This latter approach has the advantage of identifying a particular program that may be hogging resources. Good luck, Howard Hoyt

XP INFO  XP CLEANUP

I need to expose another fallacy here. Formatting is the FIRST option when things go wrong IF you have a DRIVE IMAGE to restore with. Electro-Mechanical drive damage and hardware failure aside you can FULLY restore the system in under an hour. If your drive is partitioned and you dual boot the same Operating System (in two different languages) on two separate drive partitions, you can boot to one and restore the other whilst you continue working.
