new hard drive

okay peeps i need ur help please.
i have a dvr that i have taken the hard drive out of. i am attempting to connect
it to my computer to get the movies that ive saved on it onto my computer for burning
to dvd.

my first question is can hard drives be locked like a floppy drive can, also is there
a way a manufacturer can keep u from being able to access a drive?

i ask because my computer is acting peculiar. if i go into my system properties and
expand out the disk drives it shows the hard drive there, however it does not show
up in my computer when i open it. go figure!
i will add that this drive i know runs at a faster rpm than the drive that came with
my computer cuz the cable that was used in the dvr system has more lines, they r
thinner or whatever, u know what i am talking about right? i know that i should use
that cable so please dont tell me i should cuz i know and i tried it just to see
if by some weird chance the drive would have an operating system on it but it doesnt.

so my next question is if there is noo way for me to get into the drive thru windows
how do i get to a dos prompt where i can copy the files to my drive? is there any
program out there that is free and can assist me in my quest, its just soo weird
that my bios and even the windows system properties says the drive is there but it
dont show up in my computer, even norton systemworks system info shows it there.

one last thought, the computer i have the drive hooked up to has a smaller drive
than the dvr drive, could that be an issue? anyways thanx in advance for any and
all help! Jen

WOW! A lot questions! I'm guessing that you're trying to setup your old HD as a second drive in your new PC. I'll asume that both are EIDE devices. First make sure the jumpers on each drive are set correctly. The HD that came with the new PC should be set to MASTER, and the other set to SLAVE. Check each drive as most newer drives has this info printed on them. Next you need to set the BIOS to read each drive. On some systems this is now PnP and no settings needed. Once all of this is done, boot up and you should see your drive in MY COMPUTER. Caution! In XP having one drive formated in NTFS and the other in FAT32 can cause failure on FAT32 drive. Good Luck! BJ

You took it out of a DVR? Short answer, they are not compatible, the file system and the format that is, and they are usually content protected. (could be Linux maybe, doubt that it is Windows anyway) Best look for info on a website or forum for the brand name DVR etc..

"In XP having one drive formatted in NTFS and the other in FAT32 can cause failure on FAT32 drive." Where did you get that info from John?

okay wow, only one person actually got what i said which was that i took an 80gb
hard drive out of a dvr set top box that is connected to my home tv. i want to take
the videos i have recorded on it and put them on my home computers hard drive for
burning to dvd disc.

i forget who said it but someone said it may be content locked? whats that? umm...i
tried booting the hard drive, in other words i connected only the dvr drive to my
computer to see if it had an operating system on it and it said no operating system
found so its got nothing on it.

i do appreciate all the help that i got about installing a new drive, even tho its
not what i asked, i am definitely schooled on installing new hard drives. thanx tho.
guess i will look around on the internet. thanx again, Jen

It won't work. Windows won't even recognize the movies.

There is supposed to be some hacks and software for some of the boxes but can't tell you where to find it since it is pretty much illegal.. :-( Content locked means that it is either encrypted or in a proprietary format needing a key/diciphering ability built into the software/hardware of the box to unlock it. There are multiple possibilities. Look for a forum for the type/brand of box you have. There used to be a lot of info on Google, not sure about now.. Good Luck!

Had it happen. XP gave message saying it couldn't read FAT32 drive (D: ) and asked to fix . I said yes and drive became un-readable on any system I tried. BJ

This has absolutely nothing to do with having used NTFS.

To begin with, for us to offer any hope you must tell us exactly which DVR this is.

However, the odds of success are not very good. If a DVR manufacturer does not take steps to frustrate users who wish to do what you describe, they are highly likely to face lawsuits from movie studios whose lawyers are intensely interested in protecting their copyrights.

I won't get into the complex legal and ethical issues around intellectual property at this historic juncture, but operationally this means the vast majority of DVRs use a number of tricks to prevent what you want to do. They may have totally non-standard file systems or file formats. They may employ cryptographic scrambling algorithms. They may have special hardware built into the disk controller to prevent it from working correctly in a standard computer. They may employ other tricks as well. In most cases, the only legal means to learn the details of how a particular DVR formats the content on the disk is to sign a non-disclosure agreement before they will reveal anything.

Of course, there are people who devote considerable effort and ingenuity to reverse-engineering the copyright protection mechanisms. This has become something of a cat-and-mouse game, with manufacturers changing their formats frequently in an effort to stay ahead of those who reverse-engineer their formats. Also, despite the NDAs, there will always be leaks.

Web sites that host detailed information about all this tend to come and go rapidly, because when major studios learn of their existence they tend to point lawyers at the sites and at the ISPs where they are hosted. Whatever the rights and wrongs may be, the average ISP when it gets a letter from a movie studio telling them "take down this web site or we sue" is not likely to fight them.

Had the partition been altered by Partition Magic, or was it formatted to FAT32 in the original partitioning scheme?
