Network Printer

Hi everyone. Another problem is I'm trying to add a printer to my network. I've typed in the ip address and the name and still it doesn't find it. What am I doing wrong? I chooe the "connect to printer via internet or home nework" and then typed in the address in the URL box. I then get a message saying windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was wrong or the specified path is wrong. How do I actually find the correct path. I'm totally bamboozled. Thanks for your help. I do not have a static ip address by the way. But the address I have last for one day. I'm using a router. Michelle

How is this printer connected to the network? In xp you should be able to "browse" to a connected printer in the "add printer" dialogue box. If the printer is not showing there then there is a problem with how you have connected it. The simplest way to connect a conventional printer is to attach it directly to another pc on the network - enable print and file sharing and you should "see" it from other PC's on the network. To connect a printer directly to the network can be troublesome, particularly if the printer doesn't support direct network connection!!

Hi Malcolm Thanks for that. I have a brother MFC410CN. It has LAN options. It's all auto. I do not have a static ip address though. I can print to it from one pc. I want to learn how to configure it properly - but it's such a pain.

Is it attached to one of the PCs and shared or connected to a small print server (your router may have one built in)?
If it is a shared printer make sure that the network is operating correctly other than the shared printer
If it is on a print server look over the configs of the PCs and see if you can find any differences to account for one working but not the other

Make sure you’ve got the latest drivers from brother for that printer Brother Solutions Center : MFC-410CN Homepage
You can also get the user's guides from there if you need them, the troubleshooting section is mostly MAC related but you might find something
Can you ping the printer from the problem PC? You might have a communication issue between them
