Question about 'Uninstalling Windows'

I recently bought windows xp OEM and installed it on my dell, which was running on
ME. When i went to install it, it told me that both operating systems would be on
the same partition. (which was not recommended, but it when installing, that was
my only option) Now that it has been installed, XP runs so slowly and it's hard to
get anything done.
What can I do to remove Windows ME from the system so XP is not so slow.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.

Removing ME is not likely to speed up XP, although it's not a bad idea. How much
memory do you have? What processor/speed? How much free disk space? What is your
cpu utilization (open Task Manager to determine)?

Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4
CPU 1400MHz
1.38 GHz
128 MB of RAM
I have 6.33GB used space and 30.9GB Free Space
What is your cpu utilization (open Task Manager to determine)? CPU Usage = 27%

Your cpu shoould be adequate, and disk space is fine, but you don't have nearly enough
RAM for XP, 256 MB is bottom limit for performance, 512MB would be better. RAM is
a pretty inexpensive upgrade.

At a computer store, but better yet - buy it on line. The trick is to get RAM that
is suitable for your motherboard.
Download Everest:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en
to determine make and part number of your motherboard. After you get that repost
and ask for more help.
Basically you will go to the m/b manufacturer's web page, determine the type of RAM
you need (actually Everest might provide you with that) then there are a number of
places on the web that can help you buy the right RAM.

I agree with RiceR46 that you need more RAM.
Go to the web site of popular RAM vendors such as kingston.com, pny.com, or crucial.com,
enter your make and model number and you will be informed of exactly what kind of
RAM you have and what is the max you can install.
If you live in the USA, it's been my experience that the best RAM prices are had
when the big box electronics stores/office supply stores put your kind of RAM on
sale and on rebate.
As a rule, a clean installation of XP is preferred over an installation which "upgrades"
an already-installed verion of Windows to XP. For best results, you should backup
or copy off any and all files you want to save, then do a clean installation of XP.
If you visit the Dell support pages and enter your service tag or model name and
number, you will be show a wealth of information about how to support your computer,
and you will be able to download drivers and what is needed so that your older computer
will work properly with XP.

I made this error when I installed my first XP. Along with adding RAM, I ultimately
did a clean install to rid myself of ME. ME forever clutters XP until it is removed,
at least in my experience. For whatever reason, I could not remove all of MP without
reformat.
While it can be done, but it requires familiarity with registry structure and bit
by bit removal that is, IMO counterproductive and hazardous.
I reserve the right to disagree on occasion ;o)
