Question about 'Customize Context Menus'

I have added a new menu item in my right click options. But some how, it has changed
the order of already present menu items. In the process, "Search..." has become the
default action. So, whenever I double click a folder, it opens the Search option
instead of opening the folder. Any help in this regard to re-arrange the menu items.

There are different context menus, so people may find it helpful if you would state:
-- which one you changed
-- what item you added
-- how you added it
-- which context menu is now using Search as the default action.

Here are the steps which I exactly followed:
1. I tried to add menu item for "Command Prompt" in the right click for folders.
2. I did this from Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. Then I added a new menu
item for Folder file type.
3. Earlier , in my right click for Folders, I had "Open" option at the top, then
"Explore" and then "Search" and some other items as well. But after adding the "Command
Prompt", the "Search" has come at the top. Now whenever I double click the folder,
it opens a new "Search" window.
This is very annoying. Please help...

Thanks for the info. But , the first thing which I did was exactly the same. But
in File Types -> Folders -> Advanced, I have only three options i.e., Open, Explore
and Command Prompt (which I created) and Open is already set to default. The Search
option is not even listed here. So, from where the Search option is coming in the
right click menu and where it is set to default.

Assuming you haven't done anything further since you added the Command Prompt as
a folder context menu option, try this:
Open the registry editor (regedit) and go to this registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
Right-click on the Default value in the right-hand pane, and then click Modify.
In the value data field, type: none
Click OK, and then close the registry editor.
You may need to reboot to effectuate the change.

Thanks,
Actually, yesterday the whole day, I was very annoyed. So actually I thought of trying
something. I observed for drives (C:, D: ), it was working fine, only for folders
it wasnot. So I went to registry and tried to compare the 'Drive' with 'Folder'.
And the 'none' was the only difference. Which I did and i worked. Thanks anyways
for your answer.

Not sure I understand from that what you changed to get it to work OK for you, but
if you're satisfied, that's what is important. (No need to reply back.)

I'm having the exact same problem that you experienced. I'm sorry but I try to stay
out of the registry if I can, so I don't have much experiece with it and I couldn't
follow your solution. Could you provide some additional details so that I too can
move "Search" out of the top spot on the menu such that "Open" is restored as the
default?

I wasn't having the problem, so I assume you intended to post your message to charan,
who however probably won't see it unless you post it to charan (and not to me).

Hi Mark,
To get rid of this problem, you have to modify the registry. Please follow the following
steps:
# Open the registry editor (regedit) and go to this registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
# Right-click on the Default value in the right-hand pane, and then click Modify.
# In the value data field, type: none
# Click OK, and then close the registry editor.
I hope this will solve the problem.
