Question about 'Stop Windows from Altering Floppy Disks'

I have a question about Windows XP -not altering the floppys but altering the file
name of the floppy. I have several files that relate to keeping track of household
info that I feel a need to track! For example one of these is a spreadsheet called
"Credit Card". As may be obvious I keep my credit card charges in the file. I back
it up on 3.5 floppies. I am using Win XP Home edition and Office 97. When I update
the file once a week I save it to the hard drive and then back it up on a floppy,
using the "Save As" command. When I do this the computer changes the name of the
file to "C.xls. Can anyone tell me why this happens and how to fix it?

Instead of doing a "Save As" action, just save the edited copy on the HD, then copy
it to the floppy. When asked to overwrite, choose Yes. I would consider using at
least 2 floppies and alternating between them as floppies tend to take sudden death
leaps. I have two hard drives and keep copies of important files on both, then I
back up to a CD from time-to-time.

Seems strange that it would do that, but Bob B is right. It's really not advisable
to save directly to the floppy disk. Besides not being a safe practice, it adds the
file to your MRU list, which causes annoying floppy disk searches. Also always remember
that floppy disks are the least reliable of all storage media.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your answers. I agree with all you say but what you are giving me are
"workarounds". I've used this system for about ten years using os's from Win 3.1
to XP and Office versions from 95 to 97. I have had no trouble (except failing floppy's
for which I early on adopted multiple floppy backup!). The trouble began when I tried
to use "Briefcase" so that I could incremental backups. I'm not sure why but it just
doesn't work on this machine. It did however, make a change to my Excel program that
causes this problem. I would like to correct the change.
Thanks for your interest.

Easy save fix for most occassions.....
remember YOU are suppode to be RUNNING the computer, funny how folks forget that?
well, when saving, just pop out the box at the bottom of the save window, and select
ALL FILES, then YOU choose the ext to save as... (ie, .txt, .bmp, .jpg, ) YOU are
the user / operater... Lawd did a non-human enter anything into the o / s? not REALLY...
