Hi, Well first of all, about 6 months ago i noticed that my cd/dvd drives werent reading anything. When i try to insert any disk it will remain in the drive for about 30 seconds then pop out. Also, When i start my computer a black screen listing primary, secondary slaves and master's comes up saying that the hardware monitor has encountered an error please enter power menu for details .telling me i have the following options " press f1 to continue or press f2 to enter setup" i press f2 i went to f2 and entered what i think is called the bios? i rearraged some things but still the same things happen. I think this screen has something to do with the drives not reading anything my computer is running on windows xp home, service pack 1 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70GHz 1.71 GHz and 256 MB of RAM its a sony vaio. My dvd and cd drives are named HL -DT -ST DVD -ROM GDR8160B LITE -ON LTR -24102B i do not have all the recovery cd's including disk 1.. also from startup i cannot get to the reformat screen pressing f10 because the bios screen comes up immediately,is there anything i could try? PLEASE HELP!

According to the many questions on this that come through Annoyances, XP doesn't appear to be very good at keeping track of optical drives compared to any other OS version. I don't tend to pay close attention to the software questions in this (XP) Annoyances forum, so if some repeatable fix is being covered in any of the dozens of threads, I ignored it so far.

But the forum *DOES HAVE* search capability, and you can look at some of the many threads easily enough that way. Seeing the "1.7 MHz" speed of the PC you have, I did have a hardware - related suggestion: if your PC is as much as three years old, the "CMOS" battery might be weakening, and not keeping good track of everything in Setup.

So, if the search doesn't help after all, I'll ask if you have noticed any time loss, or calendar loss, besides this pair of "missing" optical drives? If so, you need to put in a new battery.

The only other problems my computer seems to be having is that the fan seems to be louder than it should be. i wanted to install some software from cd's. my brother trasferred the data on the cd 1 from ther software to a 1gb memory card..but during the installation the setup asks to insert disk 2.. there are 4 disks included in the software that needs to be installed.. i ca install the first disk from the memory card.. and i tried putting the info from disk 2 on the card when it said insert disk 2.. but it doesnt seem to work
