XP Repair installation failed

I have a problem! My other PC (XP Pro SP2) was having 0xD1 STOP errors, and I thought
I'd do a simple XP repair install. However the repair install repeatedly stops during
device installation with a 0xFC Stop error and refuses to continue. Now I am unable
to start Windows in any mode. The remedy is probably a clean install, but I want
to take some data off the C drive before it is reformatted. Recovery Console denies
me access, and as the drive is NTFS, a ME boot disk cannot read it. There must be
a way of getting at the drive so I can copy what I want to the second drive. I still
have this second PC with XP Pro on it which should allow me to create what is needed.
Can anyone help please?

Thank you. Yes, I have just come to the same conclusion, after a long soak in a
hot bath!

Well, normal service has been resumed more or less. I slaved the drive and copied
everything I needed against re-formatting during install of XP. However I did not
know there is an option that retains existing file structures while deleting and
re-installing Windows. That has saved me some to-ing and fro-ing, but has probably
caused file duplicates all over!
The boring bit is re-installing all applications.

XP INFO
After too many failures when using ME, when it came to clean installing XP I fist
installed XP (Pro) on its own, cleaned up, ran chkdsk, defragged and made a drive
image.
Next added Anti-Virus, went online, updated the AV, disconnected from the internet
and ran a scan, then updated the OS added AdAware SE, SpyBot SD and SpywareBlaster
(tedious isn't it?) updated everything, registered the installation, sorted out all
registry modifications and tune-ups, personal settings, etc. and moved all of the
various my Documents and Email folders, paging files, etc. to the approriate partition,
installed all my programs and updated them all, and when all was right cleaned up
again and so on, and made yet another drive image. (Lots of hard work involved as
you know.)
Wouldn't it be nice if MS made a dual drive system with a Master with two partitions
and a Slave (size to be chosen at the point of sale) with four partitions and would
only allow the sale of an operating system where you had the ProductKey and did not
require registration so that, when it was installed, all of this happened automatically?
Junk the name 'TweakUI' for 'SystemSettings' where you can choose ALL of your preferences
on ONE applet and with one click of the Apply button have them all applied with just
the one re-boot.
The Operating System would come with a built in partition resizer and drive imaging
program to data DVD as standard, so this means of operation would be immediately
evident and the second partition of the Master drive would be used to either backup
drive C: or provide a partition for a second language based on the same operating
system. (I have XP Pro French on drive D:)
To me a floppy drive should also be compulsory hardware.
It would be really nice if all of the imbeciles who produce virii and advertising/marketing
trojans would just give up and throw themselves OUT of some Windows too. They are
only fish anyway.
Still, 'computing' is 'only' a 'religious' game.
