CD-RW Drive not recognizing disc in drive

I'm simply trying to write data to a CD. When I get to the step of physically writing to the CD, I get the error message "No disc in drive," when clearly there is. About 40% of my attempts are successful, but the other 60% of the time, it thinks there is no disc in the drive. Is this a known problem with the software? How do I resolve?

I see 3 options:
1) Try different CD media. This isn't usually a problem, but if your burner is older it may be touchy with what kind of CD-R's you use.
2) Try a new burner if yours is getting old.
3) Use any of the free CD burining programs available for download, rather than the "explorer" cd burning method.

Joe's List / System cleanup

Have you tried deleting the burner from Device Manager then rebooting and let XP rediscover it? Sometimes that resolves all kinds of wierd issues. You are not alone with this. I've seen other posters with the same problem but I don't remember a specific solution.

Repair install WinXP / Clean install WinXP

Another thing to try is cleaning the lens. Either use a CD cleaning disk or a blast of compressed air into the drive. Sometimes just a tiny bit of dust can cause problems.

Nero and XP and ASPI

Seems that tons of people have this same problem, and most all of those I've read
have had Nero installed. I found this site
and it lead me to another which said that even tho ASPI is very stable, when certain
burn programs are installed the install is not very well done, and that a new ASPI
install would fix this about every time.

Nero Burning ROM

Nero CD Burning Software is very stable when installed onto Microsoft Windows but
that’s not to say that problems will not occur. Some known problems happen when installed
onto Windows XP and also if installed on the same system Roxio Software such as Direct
CD.

Nero ASPI Drivers

It is important to know that ASPI Drivers can be installed from various sources such
as CD Burning software like Nero or Roxio Easy CD Creator – Microsoft XP also comes
with a version of the ASPI Layer installed.
It is common to experience problems with the ASPI Layer some caused with Nero and
Roxio being installed onto the same PC – if you have Nero it is good practice to
check the ASPI Layer to make sure its not the cause of your CD Burning problem.

I had problems trying to install a new ASPI layer, as most sites say don't use the
aspi32 file, but then recommend it be used for XP. Confusing. I finally found a
page that linked to a utility called ForceAspi, and the new version, 1.8 (which uses
the updated Adaptec aspi_471a2 file), works for XP. It forces a new install of what
gets scrambled when Nero (et al) is installed. Reboot, and it worked for me. The
site and utility is found at:

http://force_aspi_18.w.interia.pl/

If your CD-R/-RW does not even give the option to "Write these files to CD", then
right-click the burner, click the 'Properties' tab, and check the box for "Enable
CD recording on this drive". I have a DVD+R and a CD-RW as master/slave, but only
one can be Enabled at a time. If someone can tell me how to get both Enabled at
the same time, on one cable, that would be great! :-p

Hope this works for you.

Forcing Windows to recognize a drive is CD-R or CD-RW

Microsoft has notes on how to force Windows to recognize the CD drive is writeable by hacking the registry. Unfortunately for me after following these instructions I get the "No media in drive" error. At least it now gives me the option of trying to write. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529

I have the same problem, Nero no any other burning software is installed. If I log off (Start->Shutdown->logoff) and then log back on AFTER I put files to be copied in the CD (burn folder), Windows can burn the CD. I don't think that WinXP is dismounting and mounting the drive properly. Any Ideas? My machine: Compaq Presario 3000 2.4 Ghz P4, 512 MB RAM Windows XP Pro SP 2

Thanks. A blast of air solved the problem.

Michael, it appears you did not realize this, but it is considered bad form to type in all caps. Have you noticed how few people do this? There is a reason, it annoys other people and makes them not want to help you.
