Question about 'How do I obtain a new Product Activation key for Windows XP?'

I have a question about 'How do I obtain a new Product Activation key for Windows
XP?'
My computer recently died, I realised this was due to my hard drive failing. I bought
a new hard drive and exchanged it with my old one. Then I came across my problem...
Somewhere along moving house a few times I had lost my copy of Windows XP. My boyfriend
nicely offered for me to use his.
Its fine at the moment, but it keeps reminding me to activate it on the internet.
So can I phone windows and get a new product key? Will they accept the possiblity
that my boyfriend has bought a new computer, and needs to re-activate his Windows
XP? How will this effect his computer? Where can we find a number to call?
Thanks

2 words "Intellectual property". An activation key is illegal.
If you read the EULA when installing WINDOWS XP it would have advised the licence
was for one(1) computer. If it is installed previously on another PC you are out
of luck and need to buy another copy.
Next time store the CD in a safe secure place for just an occasion.
Regards
Mike

If your original copy of XP was installed on your computer by an OEM there should
be a sticker on it somwhere with a key number. That number will work with any CD
of the same version (home/pro). If there's no CoA (Certificate of Authenticity) on
your computer you will have to purchase a new copy of XP.
On the other hand, if you think you can sound convincing enough, call 800.936.5700
option zero and give it a shot.

Rarely perhaps, but not unheard of. I've gotten new key and activation #s three
times with no sobbing even!

The best answer will require the following info:
What is the make and model of your computer?
Does your computer have a Certificate of Authenticity attached to the side, back
or bottom of the computer? If so, is it for Windows XP, Home or Pro?
Was XP already installed on it when you bought it, or, did you buy and install XP
on it yourself? Home or Pro?
If you installed it, did you purchase a genuine MS XP CDROM included with a slim
pamphlet (the OEM version) or packaged in a nice pretty retail box?

I have installed my GENUINE copy of XP home on two different computers and have had
no problems with installation or activation.
