wasn't given product key

Last week I build my own system and ordered a copy of XP Home with it, so it would
be nice and legit.
Upon installing it I checked for the product key and couldn't find a certificate
of authenticity, and there was none. Turns out they gave me a "to be sold with a
new system only" version with a nice little notice that says "The PC Manufacturer
is required to attache the Certificate of Authenticity label to the computer system
prior to delivery."
Unfortunately, the geniuses who sold me the disc and the components didn't give me
a product key.
Any ideas how I can get around this? I've been trying to find a key generator (why
not? I paid $120 for this goddamned software and I want to use it) but couldn't
find any. That was quite a shock.
I assume a call to Microsoft won't help me any (Yeah, yeah, you "bought" the copy
but they didn't give you the product key, now if you excuse me I have to go play
the world's smallest violen).
Anyone know how I can get this working without the hassle of mailing back the software,
waiting for them to receive it, charge me a 15% restocking fee and then charge me
again to send another one out?
Cheers.

I would have thought you could find a key from google, however it will probably have
been used many times so I suspect that the windows update site will play its face.
Your best bet is to get in touch with your supplier and shout if you need to.
Regards Pete

Why would you have to pay a restocking fee? It sounds to me as if you received damaged
goods.

This might be worth a try, Google for [Belarc advisor] it's Free. It could show you
you're Product key etc.

It can't find a key if XP hasn't been installed.

You even paid too much

Surely you paid by credit card; if not, you may as well write it off. If so there
should be little trouble getting a full refund, or a key. You also paid way too much,
should be able to get XP Home for under $90.

If you paid by credit card, call your credit card company
immediately and inform them you did not get what you
paid for; this will generate what's known as a "chargeback."
A chargeback basically means the credit card company
refuses to pay the merchant and you owe nothing until
and unless the merchant proves that you have been
made whole.
Probably you will also need to submit a written report to
the credit card company, but this sort of consumer
protection is written into the credit card laws, at
least in the US (if you're not in the US, then it may
be different, I dunno other countries' laws).
Got any lawyer friends?

I found the legal details on a US Government site:

How about linking us to the web site and exact page on which you ordered the copy
of XP Home? I presume the disc you received is a genuine hologram-looking MS XP
CDROM, or is it a simple copy that looks like a 12 year old burned it?
And RiceR46 is right, the going price for a legitimate systembuilder/OEM copy of
XP Home Ed is in the $85-90 range.
Microsoft has a program that provides a discounted or complimentary copy of XP to
folks who have been bilked by counterfeit copies of XP, but since your copy is not
counterfeit I don't think it would apply to you. As someone else posted, it's more
a simple case of not receiving the goods you ordered and paid for.
