I have a DVD/CD Player and a DVD/CD Burner and worked fine with Window2000. Since going to Windows XP Pro, only the burner works. What happened ??

Does it even recognize a CD or DVD? Did you do an upgrade or fresh install? Were you in the computer moving stuff around? Need more input...

AnchorMan--- Upgraded from 2000 to XP Pro, 2000 is still on the comp. Nothing was moved, and it doesn't recognize it at all.... but it is the primary ide, not the slave.... system sees the slave...

Is the drive recognized in device manager at all? If it shows up there uninstall it and reboot. If it is not recognized there is it detected from the BIOS? You might try switching the master, slave jumpers around and also switching the drives locations on the IDE plugs. Some drives are just picky as to which wants to be master and slave. Are you using an 80 wire IDE cable? Sometimes upgrades will cause problems and you may have to do a clean install instead.

Now it sounds like the hard drive controller. Check the device manager and make sure you have a primary and secondary controller. Also if you have an Intel based board, you HAVE to install the ".inf" files for proper recognition by XP. If you have a VIA, Nvidia etc. you also need to install the "chipset" drivers so XP can converse properly with the system board.
