Router Frusturations

I don't know what went wrong, but I connected two computers, both running XP, to
a router which is hooked up to DSL. The problem is this. The older computer is recoginizing
that it is connected to the internet, but it is "limited or no connectivity" and
browsers cannot be opened. The computer that was already connected to the internet
says that "a network cable is unplugged" and it does not recognize that the other
computer is connected. However everything is plugged in correctly. I think it may
be a problem with the router settings but this router was purchased without a manuel
or anything, so I don't know how to access the controls. If anyone knows what the
problem could be, or how to access router controls, that would help immensly. The
router is a D-Link DI-604 Residential Gateway.
Thanks so much,
Emily

Disconnect the Router, and Modem, from House Power for a minute, then turn on Router first, and wait a minute while it boots up, then turn on the modem.

It didn't work...I'm still getting "network cable unplugged" on one comp and "limited
or no connectivity" on other comp.

Hook one of the Computers directly to the Modem. Make sure it has a Firewall on . See if the computer connects without the Router. If you want to get into router, the address is 192.168.0.1, and user name is, admin, and a blank password are default, unless you changed it.

emily: The web page I posted has an install guide for DI-604 revision A,B,C,E that you can download and also the manual. Paste this link for the manual download. ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/di604/Manual/di604_manual_205.zip

Here is an optional approach. Focus on getting one system going right first. Only
connect one computer to the router. We'll start with the limited connectivity one.
See if you can get access to the internet or if you still get limited connectivity.
If the connectivity issue goes away, then it may be a conflicting IP address which
is easy to correct. As far as the other computer, try switching the cable and see
if you get a different response. It may be a bad cable.

Limited connectivity usually indicates that a DHCP server is missing from the network. Please go into your TCP/IP properties and use a static IP address. If your DI-604 is set to default then choose an address like 192.168.0.10 since the router should be 192.168.0.1. The mask should be 255.255.255.0. At this point gateway and DNS don't really matter but you could use 192.168.0.1. Then from a command prompt try to ping 192.168.0.1 to see if your router is at that address. If it is then go into Internet Explorer and put 192.168.0.1 on the address bar and hit enter. This should get you to the Web setup page for the DI-604. As stated previously the user should be admin with a blank password. If not then you may have to reset the unit to its defaults. I copied the following instruction from the d-link site to help you reset to defaults. Step 1 Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the unit. Step 2 With the unit powered on, press and hold the Reset button. Step 3 Hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds. Step 4 Release the Reset button. Step 5 The unit will reboot. Allow 20-30 seconds before reconnecting. Step 6 The device is now at factory defaults. Note: Do not recycle power during the reset procedure. The default user name for most D-Link devices is admin and the password is left blank. Hope that helps.
