The incredible disappearing downloads

When I download files with IE, they will either never appear, or appear for a couple
of seconds in the designated folder and then vanish. I then can't find them anywhere
on the computer. Also, the download box closes whether or not I have "close after
download" checked. (I have XP SP2 with the latest MS updates.)

-Dowloading with ftp in IE works fine
 -Downloading with Firefox works fine

Can anyone help me fix this problem?

-Thanks! LloydM

Sounds like an Active X problem. Open IE, tool, options, setting, view objects and delete anything that says damaged or uninstalled. Maybe malware of sorts. Other option is to quit using IE. Firefox is great.

Came across the thread below detailing the same problem... the solution turned out being a complete uninstall of Norton/Symantec products, including using the removal tools from their site.

I just finished running the removal tool and the reg cleaner, and I rebooted.

Still have the same problem, downloads simply go into the void somewhere.

Have you tried setting IE to the defaults? Open IE, tools, options, advanced, and programs, and set defaults.

Do you mean Tools>Options>Advanced>Restore Defaults?

I had tried that already. It didn't work.

Maybe peak at the registry? I have seen this problem way back, but do not remember the fix. Do a search on download/s or default download... etc. Know what I mean. Maybe the registry is pointing to a default location. You might also want to search for a download with the advanced options search in hidden and system files. See if it is "actually" downloading.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download is pointing to C:\downloads
- none of the downloads that vanish are there.

I tried searching for vanished downlaods with the system and hidden files options
on, no luck.

Maybe set that registry key to another location and make sure the new location exists?

Just found this. I new I have seen a "download" option before. Go to Tools and then Internet Options. Click on the Security tab and the Internet icon Click on the Custom level button and scroll down to Downloads. See if File Downloads is enabled or not.

Hey again. Have you tried to refresh the system files? IE.. Start, run, "sfc /scannow". This will check the integrity of your system files. Also try this http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm. Going to bed. See ya.

Resolution? Ad-Aware and Windows Defender don't play nice together

I had tried sfc before and it didn;t work. However....I fixed the same problem on another PC that started after I installed SP2, Windows Defender, and Ad-Aware. With WD: No problem! Happy! With WD and AA: Disappearing downloads! Bummer! After removing Windows Defender (but keeping AA): Downloads stay! Happy again! I'm going to try this on the original PC and see if it fixes the problem. Maybe Norton unfairly got the blame this time...

Yup, removing WinDef fixed it!

I tried removing Windows Defender on the original PC with the problem, and voila,
downloads don't disappear anymore.

I have a third PC where WinDef and AdAware don't cause this problem, but on that
one I installed AdAware BEFORE WinDef. The ones with problems had AdAware installed
AFTER WinDef.

Now my only "problem" is deciding whether to reinstall Norton Systemworks...

-Thanks! LloydM
