40GB HD Missing 15 GB of of Space

I have a Western Digital Hard Drive
( WDC WD400JB-00ENA )
Drive is set as the master drive of two
Computer shows availible space of 3.7 GB, but
when you add all the contents of folders ans subs the total comes out to 10.6 GB
and an aditional 4 GB going to system & resources
This is leaving 15 GB of hard drive space as missing
When I run Scandisc no errors are found on the partition
Can anyone help with the 15GB of missing space?
Thanks,
Brad

I knew that the "New Math" that was introduced about 40 years ago was strange, but
I suppose it must've grown more strange after that. The difference between digital
and decimal counts probably absorbs 2-3 GB's, but you mention a set of figures that
in my version of math adds up to 18.3 GB's. Instead of a "missing 15", I seem to
be getting a difference closer to 20 GB. Is there a partition?
.

its probably a virus duplicating and eating your space. go into norton antivirus
and delete all the files in the view quarantined items section if im right all your
space would be back

XP INFO
A 40 GB hdd should give 37.25 GB of Binary space. Is it an OEM drive and does it
have a hidden recovery partition? (Usually about 5 GB).
I have seen a 250 GB drive with a 15GB recovery partition which has only about 5
GB of actual recovery files in the form of a 'Ghost' drive image and 10 GB of wasted
space.
System Restore is the usual culprit after which it might be the MFT.
How is the drive formatted?
