Question about 'Windows Installer Appears Every Time I Start an Application' - new solution

My problem began after a Office XP service pack and updates. None of the standard
solutions worked and Google searches returned nothing useful. I found a solution
and some helpful hints for the next person. My problem was caused by the security
permissions on the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MasterAggregatorForIPP\MSDAIPP
key. If that doesn't help, look at your event logs for MSInstaller errors. If that
doesn't help, turn on logging (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1127/)
and decode the logs in the temp directory. (Error code listing: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/msi/setup/windows_installer_error_messages.asp)
Good Luck!

Download from MS the "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility". It is free from Microsoft.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
Run it and it will show a list of programs it has helped to install (and track).
Feel free to delete any item you think is the cause of your problem.
By doing this it clears WI's database but does not effect the installed program in
any way.
WI has been known to cause problems, including getting programs mixed up...so the
simplest way is to delete the offending programs database record using MICU.

Have you established what WI is trying to install/alter?

I recently had the same problem with Windows Installer "preparing to install" every
time I opened Word or Internet Explorer. But I have now solved this - on my P.C.
at any rate. It appears that the problem was caused by Adobe Acrobat which intergrates
with Word, Excel, Internet Explorer etc. when they open up. I uninstalled the Adobe
Suite, re-started my P.C. and found that the problem had gone away. I then re-installed
Adobe, and everything is working O.K. with no annoying pop-ups. Hope this will help
some of you with a similar problem.

Problem solved. I had been having the same problem with the Windows Installer appearing
when clicking on IE and MS Office applications. When it last popped up (within IE)
I clicked on Start, Control Panel, Performance & Maintenance, Admin Tools and took
a look at my Event Viewer (log). The program calling for the launch of Windows Installer
was a file (something like) MS Office 2003 Web Component. Using Add/Remove programs
I removed it since I am using MS Office 2000. I then closed IE and reopened it.
I have not seen the Windows Installer again.
Hope this helps.

This solved my problem. It had to do with my 2006 Norton AntiVirus.
