Is this technically possible? (for specific case of printer sharing)

I am running Windows 98 SE machine and XP SP1 machine connected by router. What I
want to do next is sharing printer between the two machines. 98SE as host and XP
SP1 as client. I recall the moment there was some trouble in configuration such that
no way was found by myself. Converse configuration like XP as host and 98 SE as client
works perfectly with no further configuration, so I have been using that way so far
without trouble. But now renovation was done in my room, so 98 SE should be host
and XP as client. Despite my inital failure I hope that some way is out there for
me to set up printer sharing in that layout, simply is it possible technically?

I use to have printer on a 98SE box, sharing with XP puters. Sadly the 98 PC
passed away, but now have a Win ME as the Printer server for the rest of the Networked
XP puters. Networking doesn't always cooperate for some users though.

There are hardware solutions. Manual or automatic peripheral switches for instance.

The problem is in the drivers. XP and Win 9X use different drivers. It's easier
to have the printer on XP as you can load different drivers for the older machine
into XP. It's harder with the printer on the Win 9X machine but I believe there
was an option to load additional drivers into Win 98/SE/ME for computers running
different operating systems. Been so long I don't remember for sure, but I'm sure
this is part of the problem you are facing.
