Outlook 2003 System Tray Icon

Is there a way to get rid of it permanently? I do not want to use HIDE INACTIVE ICONS
as a part of my solution.
Thanks,
Tom

If you are refering to the envelope then next time it comes up, right click and select
hide envelope. If you are refering to the square, gold coloured icon, then i don't
think that there is a way to remove it.

Yes, I am talking about the square gold-colored icon. I figure there must be a way
to get rid of it. It serves me NO useful purpose.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom, i can't find any way of removing it. I did find it annoying until i right clicked
it and checked the "Hide When Minimzed" option. Now when i minimize outlook, it disspears
into that icon, i have always had outlook this way. Its odd that there isn't a setting
to remove it if you don't want it though. Mabye there is a registry key somewhere.
I'll keep looking

Thanks Matt. I agree that it's odd, and certainly is annoying that one can't simply
remove the icon the way all other programs allow one to do so.
I am familiar with "Hide when minimized", but I rarely if ever minimize Outlook.

I use both Office 2000 & 2003 and can't remember ever seeing the Outlook icon in
the systray, but if it's there it's because it's being started at bootup. Go to Run
and type in msconfig and in the Startup tab find the entries for either/or Microsoft
Office and Outlook and uncheck them. Look for other unnecessary startup items while
you're there too. Apply and reboot.

Thanks Larry, but that's not the case here. My startup list has been trimmed to bare
bones. Outlook is not there.
The subject icon only appears after I start Outlook up. Not before.
It is an annoyance and nothing more. I like to also keep my system tray icons down
to a minimum.
Thanks,
Tom

Hmmm...weird. I'm at my office machine at the moment that has 2000. My 2003 is on
my home machines, so I can't check now, but if it's appearing in the systray when
you start Outlook, does it go away when you shut Oulook down? There must be a setting
somewhere in Office or Outlook to show an icon that can be disabled. I've never had
that happen, but I'll have to remember to check it out. Maybe in Options somewhere?
If not, it probably can be disabled by a registry edit...

Thanks Larry. Yes, the icon appears when Outlook 2003 is started and goes away when
it is closed. I can find no place to stop it from appearing.
I also suspect there is a registry fix for this, but haven't seen it yet.

Yeah OK, I know this is an old thread, but when I had the same problem it was the
first I stumbled upon, and as it did not show a fix I found this elsewhere:
Right click the Start menu - choose Properties - select the Taskbar tab - click the
Customize button - select Outlook and from the scroll-down menu select Always hide.

Right-click on Windows' Start button, and choose Properties. Click the Taskbar tab,
and click the Customize button next to Hide inactive icons.
The Customize Notifications dialog will open, and show you a list of icons that appear
in Windows' system tray.
Each description under the Behavior column is clickable, and expands into a drop-down
menu containing options Hide when inactive, Always hide, and Always show.
Click the behavior next to Outlook 2003's icon, and set it to Always hide. Click
OK to validate your choice, and Ok to close the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties
window.

Sam & mccanut:
You guys need to learn to read the question before posting your "answers", because
you look like clowns. The question SPECIFICALLY SAYS, WITH THIS INFO IN CAPS, that
no solution is to include hiding inactive icons.

Thank you, Samuel & mccanute.
Your solution is the best I found in the net :-)
Dear Joz, before insulting people, please read the question and the answers with
attention. You didn't :-(

gnpaolo, Joz did read the question and "answere" and he's right. The OP wrote "I
do not want to use HIDE INACTIVE ICONS" yet that's exactly what Samuel and mccanute
recommended.
Anyway, it seems removing this annoying icon isn't possible.

What you need to do is:
1.Select tools from the menu.
2.Select options.
3.Tab until you get to email options, then press space to select this.
4.Tab until you get to advanced email options, then space to select..
5.Untick all instances of where it says about desktop alert.
6.Click OK (a few times).
That should do it, a bit obscure I know, but it appears in the system tray by implication
rather than choice,

I know this is a *very* old topic, but I've fixed this on a PC.
Go to Tools> Options > COM Addins.
I found 2 in there, turned them off, then BAM, all working as it should.

I am having a similar problem. All of the sudden last week, my outlook started
staying 'open' when I close it. It stays open in the form of an icon in my notification
area (by the clock). I get the same e-mail on my phone, and I was using that to weed
out all of the e-mail I don't want to keep. Now, since outlook keeps downloading
all of my new mail, I get every message. I don't know how to fix this since I don't
know what I did in the first place to make it happen. I'm not sure that hiding the
icons will help, since I am sure that outlook will still be 'open' and downloading
mail, and this is what I wish to stop. Any ideas?

Your best bet is to post at a Microsoft Office forum - Windows
