Have you tried leaving the password blank?

You must have UN-selected the welcome option in the user accounts, because the welcome screen doesn't ask you for a password if you don't have one. Regards Quasimodo

Go to Start > Run, type in control userpasswords2 and click Okay. See if the box
is checked next to "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
 If so, uncheck the box.

There is handy tool in the form of a bootable cd that can be found at
home.eunet.no/~pnordah/ntpasswd/cd040818.zip
It boots linux and runs a utility that allows you to reset passwords for any account
and it’s free.
Or if you want a floppy version use this
home.eunet.no/~pnordah/ntpasswd/bd040818.zip
It’s simple to use but take care and READ every step before pressing Enter

i'm trying to change my settings so that i don't get a welcome screen at all in an unactivated copy of windows XP.... the problem is, i can't access my start menu and click run because the start menu and my desktop are unavailable. all i can use is explorer. i have no password, and only one user account. i want windows to log me on automatically at startup so that i don't get prompted to enter a product key, or at least get a "remind me later" type option. please advise.

Maybe all you have to do is repair windows if not successful you have to reinstall all of it and disable the auto update of windows.. Never enter the windows website it will detect you as a piracy. then you can do what you want.
