Disabling Autoplay for ALL removable media

Another way to disable autoplay in XP (don't know if this works in other versions of Windows) is to click Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" -> click the Services tab -> and uncheck the selection called "Shell Hardware Detection". This will disable autoplay for not only all of your CD-ROM drives, but any other form of removable media (ie memory cards from your digital camera).

Disabling Shell Hardware Detection may cause quite a bit of collateral damage. Why do things the hard way when there are easy methods like:

What kind of collateral damage, specifically? I have been using this technique on every system that needs autoplay disabled and haven't had a problem yet. Don't get me wrong, the fact that TweakUI can disable Autoplay on individual drives is awesome, but on systems where you want it completely removed and don't necessarily have access to or permission to install programs on, it's much easier to use msconfig. Thanks for your post! I didn't know Tweak UI could do that.

Without SHD, my Nikon Coolpix won't talk to my laptop, and "My Computer" thinks my CD/DVD combo is an ordinary CD-ROM drive.

Like I said, I've been using this method for quite a while on hundreds of mahcines (no exagerration), and haven't experienced what you're describing. The systems that I've worked with all deal with camera cards and CDs (burning and reading) on a daily basis. I'm not saying that this is the only way to deal with AutoPlay, merely another approach to it. I've posted it because it is a solution that has worked for me in the past. As with any other change a user makes to their system, they should test it out and make sure it doesn't affect their workflow in an undesirable fashion. I have a feeling the symptoms you're experiencing are environmental, like having some other feature/service service enabled/disabled, or it could be as simple as the fact you're using a notebook, which may cause Windows to adjust things automatically.

Do the opposite of what this MS article says?

The Microsoft article you pointed at addresses the problem of Autoplay not being available for CDs when you insert them and illustrates how to remedy this (ie turning on the Autoplay function). The whole reason I initially posted was to provide another method of disabling Autoplay altogether, not enabling it.

Yes, I realise that. I said "do the opposite" so where they say put a 1, make it
a 0, etc.

Best method by far, no messing around:

Click Start
Click Run
Enter GPEDIT.MSC

On left panel Double-click Computer Configuration Double-click Administrative Templates Double-click System Double-click Turn autoplay off (The default is the Not configured). Set it to Enabled and choose 'All drives' as opposed to just CD drives. That should do it...

Rich Kurtz, I'm sorry, I mistook your message for sarcasm. My apologies. And Pics73, thanks for that shortcut. Do you know if there's a resource out there (webpage, book) that illustrates the functionality of the group policy editor?

Disabling SHD doesn't disable autorun for me. But I do keep SHD disabled because nothing I use requires it. Autoplay still works for me, but with SHD disabled my drive icon in My Computer no longer shows the autorun.inf sepecified icon.

Using the Registry Editor: These instructions will disable the AutoPlay function for all drives (CD/DVD, USB, etc). Reason: Some find it annoying that Microsoft automatically opens windows/starts programs when you insert your USB. Make these changes at your own risk (Registry Editor is involved!) Click Start->Run... Type "regedit" . Navigate to the following folder(key) in the left pane: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies Expand 'policies' key. Do you have 'Explorer' key in 'policies'? If not, create one now: [with 'policies' highlighted, click Edit->New->Key. Name the new key 'Explorer'] Click 'Explorer'. In the right hand pane right click in a blank area and choose New->DWORD Value. Name the DWORD 'NoDriveTypeAutoRun'. Double-click 'NoDriveTypeAutoRun'. Input the following in their respective locations: Value data = ff, Base = Hexadecimal Click 'OK'. Close the Registry Editor.

Thanks for the tip Jake, works a treat!
I just moved from XPPro to Home and was a little miffed that GPEDIT.MSC was missing.
So a further option is stick this into a file called "blahblah.reg" and import it from the regedit menu

====From after this line=====
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:000000ff
========To before this line=========

Cheers

I have a removeable USB hard drive and for some reason Auto has become the default action. As a result I get asked for a program to open the 'file' K:\ every time I double click on the drive. I have disabled autoplay and the appropriate key is there in the registry but the auto action is still the default action. Any clues?

Google searchon disable autorun or turn off autorun will give you lots of hits. Likewise searching this forum should give you many solutions as well.

Also. you should start your own thread, not post to the end of an existing one, you'll get more attention that way.

How to Disable the Autorun Dialog
Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Posted by Fred Lewis (1 messages posted)

To disable the autorun dialog that pops up when you connect a Firewire or USB drive,
create a new DWORD called "NoDriveTypeAutorun" (without the quotes) in the following
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

Then set its value as follows:

Each hex value represents a 1 or a 0 in binary at a particular digit. Select the
values for the options you want and add them together (thus setting 1s and 0s accordingly).

Hex Decimal Meaning 0x1 1 Disables Autoplay on drives of unknown type. 0x4 4 Disables Autoplay on removable drives. 0x8 8 Disables Autoplay on fixed drives. 0x10 16 Disables Autoplay on network drives. 0x20 32 Disables Autoplay on CD-ROM drives. 0x40 64 Disables Autoplay on RAM drives. 0x80 128 Disables Autoplay on drives of unknown type. 0xFF 255 Disables Autoplay on all types of drives So, if you want to dissable autorun for all but CD ROM insertion, add decimal 1+4+8+16+64+128 (skipping 32 for CD ROM), to get a total of 221 decimal or DD hex. Enter DD in hex as your value for the DWORD "NoDriveTypeAutorun" you created above. This will allow the installer CD ROMs you insert to still autorun, but will eliminate that annoying dialog that would otherwise come up when you connect a USB drive. To dissable autorun for ALL drives including CD ROM, enter the value of 255 decimal or FF hex (all bits set).
