Ip address conflict

"There is an IP address conflict with another system on your network."
I know little about networking but my computer is linked to a modem/router which
my roomates computer is also linked to. I CONSTANTLY get this pop up message that
DOES NOT GO AWAY if left unclicked on the XP taskbar. How do I:
A) fix this
B) JUST GET THE DMAN THING TO SHUT THE HELL UP ABOUT IT!

It sounds like either your computer isn't set to obtain an IP address automatically
and/or the router doesn't have DHCP turned on.
To fix it you first want to make sure that your computer is set to obtain
IP addresses automatically.
To do this right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties".
A window will pop up and one of the icons should be called something like "Local
Area Connection".
Right click on that and select "Properties".
You will get a window that looks like this:
Scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then hit properties.
You will get another window, make sure the option "Obtain an IP address automatically"
is selected.
If it wasn't selected to begin with, then that was probably your problem.
After hitting "OK" right click on "My Network Places" again and select "Repair" and
you should be done.
If obtain IPs automatically was already selected then you will need to login to the
router and turn on DHCP.
DHCP is what all the computers on your network will use to obtain their IP addresses.
To figure out how to login to your router do a search on the make/model.
Or post it here and someone will help. =)
Once you have logged into your router there will be an option that says something
to the effect of: "Enable DHCP".
You will want to click that and save your settings.
The router will then probably reboot itself.
Give it a couple of minutes to finish then go back, right click "My Network Places"
and select repair.
Your problem should be solved.

computers in a network, which in your case, yours and your roomates' belong to one,
have to have unique IP addresses to identify themselves..
your roomates' and your PC may have possessed similar IPs thus creating an conflict
error.. a similar pop-up message should also appear in your roomate's PC.
to resolve it, you got to have access on both PCs to individually set their IPs to
different values..
you can either assign them manually or could just let the router assign them automatically..
but since you stated you have little knowledge about networking, i would suggest
you do the second one..
to do so, you have to perform the following steps separately on both PCs...
- open Network Connections from either Windows Explorer or Control Panel
- right-click on the network device adapter icon, and select Properties
- from the Properties window, scroll down on a menu list found under the
General tab and find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
- once found, click to highlight it and then click the Properties button
just below it
- under the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties box, enable "Obtain
an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
- click OK to apply and close all opened windows and dialog boxes.. after this,
the router should automatically assign unique addresses to each PC in the network,
and the IP conflict error should never bother any of you anymore

If there are only two computers on your network, then it shouldn't be to hard to
slove. Click start, run, type cmd and then ipconfig on both machines to see what
the IP is. If they are the same, then there is your problem. If you are using a router,
then it should be assigning the IPs and that shoudn't be a problem. You could also
try typing ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew and see if that sloves the
problem. Take note though that if your modem is not also a router, this may mess
up your network settings, so make sure that your modem really is a router or you
have a router that is assigning IPs on the network.
