My network connections have dissappeared, network adapters are not listed in the device manager, and my computer is unable to recognise any network connection. I am unable to re-instal the hardware as my computer cannot detect any new hardware, plug and play is set to automatic . any ideas?

its either your network device or your motherboard's PCI slot, where your device is attached, is defective or perhaps the BIOS may have been set to disable the device..

for the first and second one, try switching with other network cards to check whether the problem lies with the device or the board..

for the last one, access the BIOS setup screen and enable the LAN device from there.. finding exactly the item which to set the network device may not be easy.. you should have an expert do this.. setting wrong values in the BIOS can destabilize your system and preventing it from booting up..
