Modem recognition & installing XP

My wife's PCI-HSF modem died and I bought a new one.

I cannot get Windows 98 SE to recognize it to save
my life!

I went to the Win 98 Forum, but no one was of any
help, really. I changed to the latest drivers, changed
to different PCI slots, and loaded and reloaded to get
the system to go to COM 3, all to no avail.

I am fed up with Windows 98 SE….!

Question 1.

I have Windows XP and now want to ask if XP would
give me less problems with Modem Installation ?

Question 2.

Can I load Windows XP right over the Windows 98 SE
operating system w/o uninstalling Win 98 ?

This is on my wife's machine (I am sending this on my
Win 98 SE machine which has no problems…yet) and
she has so darned much on her HD that I would not want
to have to reload all that stuff…!

It's quite possible the modem is defective. I seem to get about one in 5 bad (of
the cheap $6 ones I buy to repair computers with). Also, some just don't work well
on older machines and loading XP will not help.

I would first try a different brand modem.

As for loading XP over 98, not a good idea. Almost always seems to result in strange
problems occuring.

If you want to load XP, buy a new hard drive. Remove the existing one, install the
new one as master then load XP. After it's loaded, then install the old one as a
slave drive and you can copy over any data you want to keep.

You will need to reinstall all programs but though time consuming, it's not a bad
idea as it allows you to decide what programs are still usefull. A lot of stuff that
ran on 98 will not run on XP or requires an update to run.

Her machine is not so old - a soyo with a 1.2 GHz AMD
CPU and 256 MB RAM.

How can you tell about bad modems? This was a
Fred Meyer $29 Diamond Supra-Max LE PCI Fax modem.

What a pain this modem stuff is! I have *ALWAYS* had
modem problems! Each installation gives me grief.

It is almost like the whole PC and Windows setup is not
made to have a modem in the system! This COM stuff
and IRQ's is maddening......

The 'average person' is working completely in the dark
trying to install modems. The "Troubleshooting" things
for both the modem AND windows are simply bad jokes!

Do MAC's have such problems?

My experience has been that a modem will work immediately or will never work right.
Diddling with IRQs and stuff never seems to help, at least not with XP. It did with
DOS based systems and with OS/2 but not good old XP.

Can you borrow one from a friend just to try?

I went back to Fredd Meyer and exchanged the Diamond
modem for another one.
Haven't had time to try installing the new one yet.

I'll keep everyone posted -
It is the 4th of July and I have to go to dinner elsewhere.
HOT weather....!
