resetting sound defaults

Greetings:
I recently purchased a headset to use with some online games and chatting with friends.
Having said that, I had to change some settings in order to use it correctly. I've
realized that now I'm unable to hear sounds on certain websites and I can't listen
to online training videos either. This also includes no sounds with my Outlook Express
indicating new mail etc. I want to reset the default settings for XP, but I'm not
sure how to do this.
If anybody can offer a solution, I'd really appreciate anyhelp you are able to provide.
Thank you.

You could try a right click on the speaker icon (in the system tray by the clock)
select "adjust audio properties"
on the Sounds tab select Windows Default as the sound scheme then apply and ok

I should have mentioned that in the control settings for sound, the checkbox for
placeing the volume icon in the task bar is grayed out. I can't do anything with
it at all. This is why I'm trying to find out how to reset all of the sound settings
to begin with.
Thanks again.
