Creative labs/wmp9 faults

I purhased a Creative Labs Zen Microphoto 8gb mp3 player, like Ipod you have to install
their own software to get the music from your pc onto the player.
After much messing around with this product i took it back to the store and traded
it for an ipod nano.
Creative software uninstalled.
The problem i have now is that windows media player has messed up, i can only get
a miniscule amount of tinny distorted sound out of it even when its cranked to the
max, all the connections to the pc from the speakers are fine (first thing i checked),
yet the logon souns work perfectly.
Running XP Pro if thats any help.
Any ideas appreciated.
