password authentication system

I recently aquired a Dell Latitude laptop that has this little problem. When I turn it on it says "this computer system, 276ZJ01-D35B, is protected by a password authentication system"......you cannot acess the data without the correct password. I'm not, nor do I know, the original owner, and no I didn't rip it off from anyone. Is there a way to get around this? :-/

I assume you can bootup but can't access any files

Download a freeware called SIW from http://www.gtopala.com/

Run it and click the area called "secrets" in the software

It will display all your passwords

If you cannot get past bootup, a reinstall of Windows is the next step.

Regards
Mike

Some Laptops have Bios, or Hard Drive Passwords, that are hard to get around. I don't know about the Dell, but if this what you are facing, the Bios passwords many times need to have a Chip replaced on the motherboard, and on the Hard Drive Passwords, it is easier to just put in a new Hard Drive. If someone has very valuable Data on the Hard Drive, then expensive services are available that can retrieve the Data. I guess they take the Hard Drives apart to replace main Circuit board with a new one to get around the password restriction.

Dell Web site had some details that if you transfer ownership at the Link they will help. You probably will need to know some details of original owner. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/change_order/en/tag_transfer

No, you don't need to know anything about the previous owner:

> Service Tags(s) to transfer
> If you did not provide the previous owner information above, you must provide both the
> service tag and the express service code to transfer the ownership of requested systems. Well, in theory anyway. Been there, done that. It will appear as if it won't work. What you need to do is 'fake' most of the information about the previous owner, e.g. Name: "not known", Phone: (555) 555-5555, Zip-code: 11111 and so on. In the end you need the Service Tag AND the Express Service Code. Both is on the body of the laptop somewhere. If not, call the Service Centre and explain your situation. If you are nice to them, they will be nice to you (it's the nature of the Indian culture)... Regards Quasimodo

Just wondering why you would "acquire" something that had this roadblock installed
on it?

In reply to Dan S. I was not actually the one who aquired it in the first place, my son's father did. I wouldn't have given a red cent for it. He knew not what he was doing, and didn't bother to ask me first.

Thanks for your info. I turn it on you see the DELL splash screen then it goes straight to that message. Try to hit F2 to go into setup it says entering setup then instead it goes to that message screen the end... It won"t boot from a CD and did not come with a floppy drive. I tried jumping the bios password (I don't even know if it has one) I tried shorting the cmos. I unplugged the internal battery turned it on and tried to drain it that way, then it sat unplugged for over two months. It didn't do a thing. The damn cmos didn't drain. The only thing I have not done is change the harddrive, because I am not sure if this thing is on the board, the bios, some other chip, on the harddrive or simply part of windows XP security.

I heard somewhere Dell has a patent on this password authentication system, also there is a master password which I would guess a person would have to get from Dell. So I 'm going to try your suggestion and go to there site and see what gives. Yes the service tag and express code are both on a sticker on the bottom of the machine. I'll let ya know what happens Thank you everybody who took the time to try to help me out. I appreciate it

THIS WAS sO SIMPLE. I went to the Dell site put on the service tag searched the troubleshooting area with the phrase password authentication system read a couple of lines it said password is "password" I tried it, Bingo! Next screen that came up was almost the same as the first one only it says this Harddisk 126874524173.. is protected by bla bla bla as before. so I added disk to my search phrase read a few lines then I tried administrator it actually checked but no dice... so i clicked the link that i was reading the header for I thought in the header the rest of the word had been cut off as they do, but when i got to the link i clicked on it said the same thing "Admin" so i typed that, and Yep BINGO! Those are the defaults for that password authentication system. "Password" is for the system and "admin" is for the disk. I'm in and by the way the cmos did clear when i was tryng to clear it cuz it says "time of day not set" and it wants me to run SETUP program strike F1 to continue, F2 to run setup. Thanks again all.

this isnt working for me im trying the same procedure you did. im at the screen that says #6WC3J71-595B is protected by a password authentication system. You cannot access the data on the computer without the correct password. Please type in the system or administrator pw and press enter. When i try to type in the pw i dont see any of the letters typing. The enter button is working correctly but idk about the others cuz i cant see them.
