"It's seemingly impossible to do something as simple as change the icon for all Internet Shortcut files on your desktop (*.URL). Has anyone figured out how to do this?

I think you can change them as File Types (*.URL) in XP using the proceedure in this article:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/sawyer_03june30.mspx

If you want to change individual url shortcuts I think you will have to resort to third party software(?)

Maybe it's different on some machines, but when I right click on an Internet shortcut on my desktop and choose Properties, I have an option to Change Icon. Oh. Rereading, I see you want the same icon for all. Maybe you'd have to do them individually.

No, I do not want them all the same. It's different for an internet shortcut then for a windows shortcut. ALthought, as you say you have the option to change them, but they do not change.

I have a folder full of shortcuts to various web sites. I have different icons for most of them. I don't know if this makes any difference, but I'm not using those icons that you're first offered when you hit the Change Icon button. I have a folder of icons I made myself, and I browse to that folder. Are you signed in as admin when you try to change the icons?

I can change the icon for a url shortcut on the desktop, but when I double click on it to access the website, the icon changes back to the default of the website itself. This started happening when I installed IE 7.

One workaround is to put the .URL somewhere else then make a shortcut to it. You can't simply hold alt and drag or right-click and go to "create shortcut" to do this. That will just copy the shortcut - no thank you, that's not what I wanted, Windows! However, you can make a shortcut to any other file and then manually edit its target property to point to the .URL file.
