Question about 'Turn Off the PC-Speaker'

I have a question about Turn Off the PC-Speaker (can I just turn the volume down?):

I don't want to turn off the internal speaker or "beep", just turn it down. Clearly the volume control has no control over this. It used to be quiet, now it almost hurts it's so loud. Is there any way to just turn down the default internal speaker beep? Thanks
