IE 7 and Links Icons

I just updated to IE 7 and wondering if anyone knows why the Icons for links will not allow you to select a Icon file on your local disk. I have some that I created and like to use. As soon as you click on a Links Icon it defaults back to the standard IE icon. The only ones that seem to stick are the Websites that supply a Favicon. They used to stay with IE 6. Any ideas or suggestions to try? Thanks a bunch!!

I have seen a couple posts about that at a msfn forum. Seems MS knows about it, and may provide a Patch down the road.

After I read those ico Posts a few weeks back, i decided to try it myself. I still had a few hundred favicons from my IE days saved. I just stuck My Favicon folder in the My Pictures folder to see what would happen, and changed the MSN Butterfly ico to another ico file, and it did stay put for the couple weeks I had that computer running. So I'm not sure how common the bug is.

Hmmm, interesting, I'll do a little experimenting.

I powered up the spare computer I have today with IE7, and went to MSN web page. The Butterfly Favicon that MSN uses returned, So it appears that the custom icons don't stick if a Web site has a favicon when you make a return visit.

As for the sites that don't use a favicon, and just get the generic Blue e, I was able to change the favicon to a custom one. The Change took effect when I closed, and reopened IE.

I went back to visit the Site, and the Custom Icon seemed to stick. Even rebooted, and the custom Icon is still inplace. Like other versions of IE when clearing cache all the favicons disappeared, but my one custom Icon for the site that didn't use favicon remained.

Read MS has really tried to solve favicon problems with IE 7 because of all the problems Users had over the years, but it still seems pretty buggy to me. Good luck.

I updated my wife's system today to IE 7 and she also had a few custom icons that were in her My Documents folder. They wouldn't stick there but then I moved them to My Pictures and now they seem to stay. Time will tell. Thanks for all your input and time spent, it is greatly appreciated.
