You probably have too much junk loading at startup. Eliminate 'unnecessary' startup
applications, and disable unneeded/unnecessary XP Service

Of course, leave your firewall in startup. Go through the Options/preferences of
each of the programs in the Notification (Systray) area, one at a time, and uncheck
to load at startup. Most programs can be started manually.

For those that don't have an option, you can uncheck them in MSCONFIG under startup
tab. First read the descriptions of the entries on one of these sites to help determine
if they're necessary.

*Do NOT mess with anything under the other tabs. Never disable Services using MSCONFIG
You may uncheck something vital that Windows needs to load, and you'll be stuck
not able to start your system.

Go through XP's Services and disable those that aren't needed. If you're unsure,
use the Safe setting.
Black Viper's Services Configuration

To access Services: Start | Run type Services.msc

If you still have problems, you should run some malware scans. Let us know how it
goes.
