Slow boot

Hi there,
Well, since I have XP PRO (5 years) I have a booting problem that nobody has been
able to solve so far.
Now, after some years, I try again, maybe there's more experience around and some
of you can help.
When I switch my desktop on, I get all the disk controls etc. in DOS, then, a blank
screen for 27 sec., finally the Windows XP image page that introduces to all the
windows booting process.
The 27 sec. are a constant since day one, in the past I tried Bootvis and did whatever
was possible to reduce the booting time, but no changes.
I also formatted my PC, no change.
All the services are perfectly matching my needs, therefore the ones I do not need
are disabled.
My machine is clean, no spywares, no malware, no virus or so, the registry is clean.
After 5 years the bloody 27 sec. are there and still, do not know why.
Connection is not the problem, I was on cable before, on ADSL now, same story.
I still hope somebody can help me to understand, I never lose my hope :)
Thank you guys.

I would look toward your motherboard. There may be some BIOS settings you can change
to boot quicker. Have you ever been in your BIOS?

Hi,
Yes, definitely that was something I did and there is nothing that prevents the booting
to be quicker.
However, I will look at the BIOS another time.

Hi,
Oh yes, I took the risk already 2 years ago, I have the latest version made for my
MB, which dates December 2002, there is nothing more recent than that.
Thanks

Generally a hardware issue, usually a stall before, or when handing off to the boot
hard drive. Is this the same HDD that you started out with?? Some of the older
drives would cause this, especially if they were not jumpered correctly for a Master
with Slave installed (mostly the older WDs and a few Maxtor models).. A troublesome
floppy drive (and CD drives) can also stall the booting. Have you tried disconnecting
everything except the booting HDD, disabling the floppy in the BIOS (and physically
disconnect it) to see what happens? Could be deeper hardware issues but it takes
diagnostics hardware installed into the machine to really diagnose a deeper problem
IME.. Worst case is it is an issue with the motherboard, which wouldn't surprise
me with Acer.. :-(

Hi,
You hit a good point.
If you look at my signature profile, you see my first drive, a Maxtor 40GB, I had
the problem already 5 years ago.
Then, I bought the WD 120 GB that became the primary drive, while the old Maxtor
is now the secondary one (back up).
With WD nothing changed, notwithstanding I installed the latest BIOS and of course
reformatted.
I never tried to disconnect all the drives and leave the WD only, but I will do and
let you know the result.
Thanks for the tip

Hi,
I tried to disconnect all the HDDs (except the system one, which is the WD) and CD/DVD
players and Floppy.
Interesting, I discovered the following:
1) WD is my primary HD, where on C:\ I have my OS installed. When I switch my PC
on, the system does not boot.
This is a mistery to me, because I can see that WD is my primary disc and it is!
2) I tried then to connect the Maxtor, which is the slave disc, so, WD + Maxtor,
the system boots up with the usual problem of the 27 sec. blank screen in between,
which is the normal situation.
So, I guess the problem is the old Maxtor, but why cannot I boot if I disconnect
it??
Hope someone can explain this, I feel we are close to solve the problem...
Thank you
Alex

OK guys, another step...
The reason why I could not boot up with WD is because I had to change the jumper
settings due to the fact that I have no longer to IDE devices on the same cable.
After having done so, I can boot up from WD.
Sad news is that the 27 sec. blank screen remain there, as a result, I don't know
anymore where to put my hands.
Funny enough, (I forgot to mention this before) if I boot with OS W2K instead of
WXP, the boot is fast, no 27 sec. to wait.
Ideas before I give up??
Thank you
Alex

OK, situation is as follows:
Primary Master: HDD WB 120 GB
Primary Slave: None
Secondary Master: Plextor DVD 716A
Secondary Slave: Plextor CD 16/10/40
I took off the Maxtor from the case because it was too noisy and basically I did
not use it.
The blank screen problem is now even worse :( 32 sec.
I have no clou why, the BIOS looks OK to me, it sees the drives correctly, but of
course there are so many other parameters that maybe one of them is creating the
issue??
Please let me know if you can help.
Thank you
