I have windows xp (sp1?). Can I update to sp2 free of charge? If so, where do I go to do it?

It's free. Do a Google search on download sp2 for links to
various places you can download it from. A MS site is always best for this.

Please read through this before trying to install SP2 though. If your system is not
ready for it you can end up with a real mess on your hands.

Directions here on how to successfully install XP SP2. Improper installation of this
service pack has caused some significant problems for users. Read through the information
here to improve your chances of success:

The SP2 link on this Home Page will be the whole exe file. After you download the File, Reboot, and turn off all background applications like AV software. Turn on System Restore for a false sense of safety, Then just click on the file, and SP2 will install. When Done save the File, in case you need it for future installs. If you have broadband then don't worry about saving it, since it doesn't take that long to download with DSL.
