Problems installing Windows XP 2002

18 Months ago I bought a genuine Windows XP 2002. and I installed it with no problems,
I didn't like it so I put Win98 back.
Last weekend I decided to do a format and rebuild with WinXP. This time when I tried
to install XP it came up with an error.
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to
your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
If this screen appears again follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space, if a driver is identified in the stop
message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates, try
changing video adaptors.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates, disable BIOS memory options
such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components,
restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select
safe mode.
Technical Information:
Stop! 0x0000007E(0xC000001D, 0x8084006E, 0xF9E7BB9C, 0xF9E7B898)
I changed the BIOS settings, I disabled the cach and shadowing but that made no difference,
the same error appeared. The BIOS is the same as it was 18 months ago and it install
ok then.
The installation didn't get as far as the normal would you like to format to NTFS
it just got as far as loading the initial drivers.
So Win98 went back in, no problem.

Did you start install from within 98 or by booting from XP install CD? (second option
is best - especially as it sounds like you want a clean install - use the partitioning
tools to remove 98 partition and create new on for XP - obviously back up any data
you need before starting this).
Have you changed any hardware since you last tried to install XP?
It is possible (if you haven't changed anything) that a hardware item is starting
to die - causing the problem (XP is more sensitive to bad hardware than 98).

Have a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330182/en-us
Two quick and easy things to check:
1. Is the BIOS up to date?
2. Run a memory test: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Thanks for your replies Steve and Dan.
@Steve - I did the install like I do any install an Fdisk, format and rebuild so
there was nothing left of Win98.
I've haven't had an hardware change for a few years, its the same hardware as the
last XP install.
There is one thing I noticed last week. I make programs in VB and I made a memory
checker a few years ago. It checks available memory and free memory. I noticed that
the free memory was only 7Mb out if 256Mb. I thought this was low because it normally
shows 180Mb. So is there one of the 128Mb strips are playing up I will have to test
some more. I checked it later on and it was back to 180Mb, so it fluctuates. Thats
with nothing running.
The M$ link that Dan posted talks about memory. I downloaded the file. It talks about
loading onto a bootable floppy to test. Ok I made a bootable floppy and ran mtinst.exe.
You decide if you want a bootable floppy or a HD partition. I selected floppy, it
copied files onto the floppy. I looked at the files on the floppy and there were
no system files, it wasn't bootable anymore.
I checked for any BIOS updates for my Award v4.60PGA and nothing came up. As I said
before XP installed 18 months ago on the same computer configuration no problem.
So the only thing left is this memory problem.

As I was saying I thought the memory could be causing a problem so after Christmas
I bought 2x256Mb. I did the usual format and tried to install WinXP again but it
kept coming up with the same error. As I said before I haven't had any hardware changes
apart from a new modem six months ago.
The same WinXP installed 18 months ago without any problem. So this topic still isn't
resolved.

I have only encountered this problem once when upgrading an older machine from '98
to XP Pro. Same symptoms exactly. Checking the hardware compatibility list revealed
that the onboard video chipset was not supported, which was really irritating because
that did not show up when checking for compatibility using the utility on the installation
CD. Luckily I have a few old PCI video cards lying around and found one that was
compatible, installed that and everything was fine afterwards. Hope this helps. Cheers.

A drinking buddy of mine has just told me about his experience with this one. His
solution was to pull out all the devices not required at installation time such as
network card, sound card etc (disable in BIOS if on-board devices) and to use only
PS/2 keyboard and mouse, not USB. His theory on it was that some PNP devices might
have been sharing an IRQ or something like that but he couldn't confirm it. Apparently
the installation (full install - not an upgrade) went as smooth as silk with that
minimum configuration and he simply added the devices one by one until fully configured.
Sounds reasonable to me! Hope this helps. Cheers. Spexx.

I have done something similar to what your friend had to do, but it's more because
I forgot to keep a Ghosted image, or I've altered the hardware enough to disturb
the OS severely (I tend to do a lot of hardware swapping, which is another reason
that WinXP is secondary to W2K on a majority of my systems).
When it's an entire mainboard that changed, that's a lot for the OS to swallow, and
a repair is going to be needed. That's when I've found it helps to remove everything
the system can do without. And that's when I will have no Ghost image I can use
. .
.

I thought of that one Spexx. The only thing that I've changed since my first install
was I had a new modem. So I removed the modem and tried it again be the same problem
still persists.

Very frustrating! My neighbour, my drinking buddy and myself are all agreed that
it is definitely a flaky hardware problem. It worked once - it doesn't now, so that
conclusion is inescapable. If hardware diagnostics do not show up any problem, it
is time to get clever with it. I am assuming that you are booting from CD to install
XP. There is an alternative, slower method that allows you to see exactly where it
falls over - bootable set of floppies
(6 disks required) - it runs much slower so you can see exactly what driver is being
loaded before it will BSOD on you. That might give a better clue. Hope this helps.
Cheers. Spexx.

Yes I'm booting from the XP CD Spexx. I'm even ahead of you with the bootable floppies,
I downloaded them 12 months ago and that didn't work either.
I've even been on the M$ site and tried to log a problem/complaint but that doesn't
work either.
Contact Us. If you
have a problem with XP they are asking for a reference number not the CD-Key. Well
I can't get it to install so I will never see this reference number.
