Question about 'Downloading Windows Updates'

I have a question about Downloading
Windows Updates:
After having just recently re-installed windows XP Home on my sons PC using the recovery
disks supplied with the PC (Acer Aspire G600P) I then had to install service pack
2 again using the disk obtained from Microsoft. Everything seemed to be working fine
for a few days and he had reinstallled most of his games and using them OK. Then
after a windows auto update which involved downloading around 64 updates, we can
now no longer install any new software, as we get an error message stating that the
software exe file has encountered a problem and has to shut down. If we restore back
to the point before the windows update we can then install the game. Does this mean
that one of the 64 updates is causing this problem? If anyone has any answers/ideas
I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks

You answered your own question. Without auto updates your machine runs fine. With
auto updates it's a loser. Use Svc Packs only. No auto updates. By the by, can you
name the 64 updates and their purpose? Or let's put it this way, would you install
64 programs on your computer not knowing what they are or what they do.

Why not try using custom option then choose say 10 of the updates to install, test
to see if the problem recurs , and so on until you identify the problem update
Cheers HC

Thanks for the response. You are absolutely right about 64 programmes being installed,
of course you wouldn't do that normally, without knowing what they are or do! Guess
I'm just one of those indoctrinated Microsoft dummies who believee everything MSoft
does is only good for your machine. Not anymore.....autoupdates is now forever disabled

Thanks Harry. That's one way for sure but I have decided that as my machine was running
fine prior to the 64 updates, I'll just make do without any of them.

Good choice. No MS updates on my boxes in almost four years. No problems either.

... and I have 3 machines running XP Pro, all with SP2 and all updates, no problems
either.
No way to prove this but I think it's quite likely most of the people running XP
have automatic updates turned on and receive all updates. We only see the ones here
who have problems. That tends to leave out the thousands (hundreds or thousands,
millions?) who don't have any problems.
IE7 though is not on any of my machines since it does cause many different problems.
