I have a question about a supposed program called "portfolio Analysis.cab" which
I cannot get to open in XP. I am directed to an Extract box which asks me to extract
the file and when i do this the same process repeats itself when i try to open the
extracted file. Any ideas ??

cab files are not programs. A cab file is simply a storage file that contains many
files. There are free cab readers that can be found with a google search.

It seems quite a few people having the problem with .cab files under XP. I hit the
similar problem recently when trying installing some software consisting of .cab
files. The installation program(InstallShield) throws up a "Error 1335:data1.cab
is corrupt ..." and exits unsuccessfully.
If you have the same problem, do the following: 1. check what program is currently
associated with .cab files (by creating a dummy cab file, for example); 2. open that
program and de-select its association with .cab.
This should restore original XP built-in program to opening the cab files.
What's happened here is 3rd party zip/unzip programs (WinRAR for example) pop up
those sales windows during installation, invisible to you but stop the installation
from continuing and make it exit with "error 1335..." which doesn't really tell you
the underlying cause and what to do next .
